Today is Neil's 33rd anniversary of being on the air in Miami. March 1, 1976 Neil started on 1360 WKAT. Love or hate him, Neil is the most successful local radio personality in Miami radio history. Comments?

It's a shame 'QAM cut his stones off.
I hear people say that he'd actually settled down after moving there from 610, if that's the case then I could only imagine how raw he must have been. Even the early days on 'QAM were pretty edgy but alas.

Relative to everyone else, he is still raw and edgy. Neil is, frankly, the best talk radio host I have ever heard. His stream-of-consciousness presentation, combined with his bits, make his show the best listen in talk radio. Those of us in South Florida are lucky to have him on the dial.

I always wondered why Neil is only in one market.

Does anyone know why he wasn't successful in Tampa?
Neil was part of a package deal on 620 AM (call letters were then WSUN) when both WIOD and WSUN were owned by Cox; the package included Neil, Rick and Suds , and Randi Rhodes.

If I'm not mistaken, either WIOD or WSUN-620 was sold by Cox and at that point, WSUN went in a different direction.

Neil, Randi and Rick and Suds were on for several years on 620; I enjoyed listening to Neil and Rick and Suds and when all of them had a public appearance at the old Clearwater Mall in Clearwater, there were hundreds of people in line to get their autographs, pics etc.

btw- the late Bob Lassiter did morning drive at that time and Neil came on at 1000 on WSUN, whereas he started at 0900 on WIOD.

Also, at least once, maybe twice Neil, Rick and Suds and Randi were in the St. Petersburg for a week to do their shows from the WSUN studios.

drt

Those were some glory days for WSUN-620.

Comment? Yes, in terms of longevity, influence on the market, audience size, I think the position of "most successful" you appointed Neil to actually belongs to Bill Tanner, who is likely to be the most successful PD in the market, too.

One of the reasons Neil did not work out in Tampa is political. Neil is far more liberal than Tampa's audience. Sure, the "shock jock" shtick works in Tampa; MJ and Bubba the Love Sponge have proven that. However, every successful shock jock in Tampa has been a right-wing conservative.

I can't think of a PD in the Miami market more successful than Tanner.

Nor an air personality... the sheer size of his morning show audiences dwarfs any other contender.

When you think south Florida radio Bill Tanner is the man.
Tanner may be the man for music formatted radio, but Neil is the best there is with talk radio.
