Neil Rogers

I know this is off topic for the North Florida board but there is a thread on the South Florida board about the health issues facing Neil Rogers. He had returned to South Florida for treatment after a heart attack and stroke but he was found too weak for open heart surgery and has been moved to hospice care. That doesn't sound good.

I used to always time my South Florida road trips so I could pick up the start of Neil's show south of Orlando and then listen all the way down the turnpike. I know he wasn't for everyone but he certainly was one of a kind and at the top of the Miami/FTL ratings for thirty years or so. What a great talent!

Jeff, thank you for posting this. I had thought about posting something here but lately I'm not sure what is appropriate or relevant anymore.

I had the pleasure in meeting Neil over the years in station appearances. When I lived in South Florida, mostly out of boredom I’d head to Pompano Park at night. Neil was often there and occasionally I chatted with him. Today, when we hear so much about how talent doesn’t matter, I know they can never include Neil Rogers.

A little thing like an artificial sweetener made him an even bigger star than he was already. You see, in South Florida, it was pretty common for the senior citizens to go to buffet places and early bird places and take everything that wasn’t nailed down including all the sugar packets. He just hammered these folks and it made very big news. If I recall, I think the city of Hallandale had to have a town hall meeting that was actually broadcast on his show because it’s mainly senior population was in such a tizzy.

Having lived there, some of the rude and obnoxious behavior was something that just hit home for so many of us. He understood that and tapped into that emotion. The result was double digit ratings and getting tons of younger listeners to tune in on a band today is considered dead – AM.

Anyway, that is how I remember Neil. He made me laugh when I really needed to. He brought tears to my eyes too. He made me think. He reminded me why I grew to love radio as much as I had. Yes, what a great talent and so I celebrate that.
