NEMO - what did it mean re: Telco

I remember some patch fields that had circuits labeled NEMO (NEMO 1, NEMO 2 and etc.) for certain dedicated audio lines between station and phone company central office. We used them to bring in remotes, send feeds out, phone company related stuff and such. I know that NEMO stood for something but I've been racking my brain trying to remember what the letters stood for in the "old days".

Does anyone recall what NEMO meant? This term was used both in radio and TV.

Thanks. AL
