Neo-Soul....Could it be a viable format

Is there an audience for this format to be on a FM stick 24/7?

I am not sure.

Probably the closest station to this format currently is KRNB Dallas with its currents focused Urban AC, some of which could be classified as Neo-Soul and of course there is WHUR's HD Channel.

Yeah, but they are not on a full signal stick. Its hard to hear them sometimes. I would like to bring the Neo-SoulCafe's music to a FM stick. They are the best online neo-soul station on the 'Net.

There is an audience for this format but the problem is, Act Of 1996 Kiiled The Radio for The People , Very little local ownership . These National Radio Ownership ( Clear Channel,CBS and Radio One ) only care about making money and thats it ( more Money ,cut jobs and F the People needs ). Before 1996 , Local Ownership made money and listen to The Local People , for what they wanted on the air . Neo-Soul format can be a viable Format ( make money ) only if , Clear Channel , Radio One and CBS , think that they can get major money, like there Urban and CHR/R formatted stations .

I think it could but it I don't think it could be all neo-soul and survive, although I would listen to it. I don't think anyone would have the guts to put the format on. We're stuck in the same-o, same-o. No risk takers...

I think neo-soul alone as a format would be a tough sell. I've been noticing a slight trend that some u/ac stations breaking away from hip-hop in their programming, and some urban stations are following suit. They're not getting away from it, just certain songs with suggestive lyrics are being pushed to later hours if not overnight.
With that said, a little history here...urban a/c radio at one point used to be what we considered fullservice, meaning you heard music that appealed to younger and upper demos alike. That's when contemporary jazz artists like Roy Ayers, George Duke, Ronnie Laws, Lonnie-Liston Smith, Gerald Albright etc. etc. along with great vocal artists helped to solidfy the urban a/c base.

Adding neo-Soul brings into focus the diversity that urban a/c radio has and can showcase. But it takes someone with an open mind to see and embrace it. Or is it too much to undertake? Would you rather have satellite radio pickup on it and make a channel that would showcase it?
Message to (Radio One & CC, who have the capacity and network of stations to create change in urban a/c) while other companies have urban stations fighting in-house to one up each other, someone take the reins and make urban a/c a fullservice format that you as broadcasters, parents find uplifting sending a positive message that you would let you children listen to, advertisers want to in on, revenue streams go up as do ratings. And everybody's happy.

Radio can come fullcircle "it just takes focus"

I would love to see this "full-service" format come back but I don't see it happening anytime soon. It was great to be able to listen to the same stations my parents listened to and hear a broad cross-section of music.

As for neo-soul, if someone was to delve in the format, it would have be packaged as an urban/ac format that has a heavy dosage of neo soul music, along with some jazz, hip-hop (possibly dayparted), old school R&B and some new R&B that is truly R&B, not this teeny-bopper R&B.

I think that it could work, but you have to focus your sales team. They would have to go out and market the station to the target demo. You have to give added value to your sponsors. You would have to be very patient and committed to the format. Basically you have to grow the format and your audience. Open up the playlist a little and take some chances. Have a mixture of gut programming and research. You have to think outside of the box, and be creative.....

But this is radio and I am living in a fantasy world!!!!!!!!!!
