Neon Trees 'Everybody Talks'

I've been really enjoying this song and I was thinking it could be a good fit for CHR. What does everyone else think of this song? In my area only alternative rock WCYY has added it so far but according to allaccess.com CHR's are playing it like WiXX in Wisconsin and KUDD and KZHT both in Utah. Of course after a quick search on wikipedia I found that Neon Trees is from Provo, Utah so that could have something to do with two of the stations. I also have first hand experience of hearing it on a CHR, WFTN 'Mix 94.1' in NH.

Much like "Animal" did, this is starting off slow but steady, though I don't think it will chart quite as high. If I had to pick which alterna-pop song will eventually do better at CHR, I would wager on Grouplove "Tongue Tied" over "Everybody Talks".

I think it's almost out of momentum already - IMO sounds way too much like Animal

Also agree. I hadn't heard the song at all on local stations but was in my wife's car a few days ago and heard it for the first time on her satellite radio. Thought I was hearing Animal until I realized it was actually something "new".

If the song had been released as a follow-up to "Animal" when the band was new and fresh, it probably would got more attention on the CHR stations than today. That seems to be one of the big hurdles with new rock. Too bad 3Oh!3 and Kings Of Leon couldn't have followed up their big hits a couple of years ago. Now they're almost forgotten.

Funny that I mentioned that I hadn't heard the song locally in Greenville, SC. Our Hot AC, WMYI, has begun to spin it.

Listening to it again, I actually like it more than I first did thinking it sounded too much like "Animal". It's actually pretty catchy.

I Think it would be a much bigger hit if CHR stations would give it a chance...It's catchy...and no less CHR sounding then Train's "Drive By". The song is currently within the top 30 on the itunes charts...so people are liking it. On the flip side it is still hanging around...it seems we are seeing more and more tunes hang out for a bit before catching fire and blowing up.

Despite the reluctance for some CHRs to give this a spin, "ET" has a bullet of 465+ and is charting at 25...Keep going!

At what point does a CHR hit go from being only played on adult friendly stations to acceptable by all of the CHRs, even the rhythmic leaning ones that are protecting a sister Hot AC in the same market?

The way that this hit has been NOT played is classic manipulation and I hate this trend.

What doesn't make sense is that Clear Channel is so quick to "protect" its Hot ACs, but they could care less about "protecting" their Rhythmic stations - I'm convinced the execs at Clear Channel just plain like Rhythmic-leaning music

They were the same ones who helped to kill dance music in early 00's by focusing more on the hip hop side of top 40. Now it's the pop rock they seem to be writing off to some degree. Not sure who to blame because the dance they used to ignore they are now playing. Makes me wonder if this means the alternative and pop rock they are ignoring will also become the next thing they are playing again... There must be more going on than meets the eye here.

With Clear Channel, it's probably political - just imagine how much pressure labels must be putting on them to ensure certain artists hit #1 on the airplay chart - in the 00s it was hip-hop artists, and in 2012 it's pop/dance artists

I do think the "protecting sister station" thing is BS though, since Clear Channel could obviously care less about protecting Rhythmic stations - it's just an excuse for CHRs to ignore rock-leaning tracks so they can focus on artists the labels are currently "pushing"

The fact that this has cracked the top 20 without any adds from the usually pop/rock friendly Cumulus stations is impressive.

Didn't most of the Cumulus stations add this a long time ago? I'm still waiting for local Clear Channel Kiss 95.3 to add it but since they protect WERZ (a sister Hot AC in the same market), I'll probably be waiting forever.

Perhaps, but I don't remember it. If so, it didn't last long and none of them seem to be playing it now. I do remember Cumulus stations playing "Your Surrender", the follow-up to "Animal", so maybe that is what you are thinking of.

The fact that the Cumulus stations haven't added "Everybody Talks" yet is a little surprising. Neon Trees first CHR hit "Animal" still gets quite a bit of play on many of those stations.

I was wrong about Cumulus but since the track has finally cracked the top 20 there is hope. WSKX (Kiss 95.3 - CC) hasn’t played it yet but there were all over Grouplove and give it a fair number of spins.

I give the track credit for its refusal to go away despite so many CHRs ignoring it. It’s hung it forever and is still gaining. It makes you wonder how much bigger of a hit it would have been if it got the attention that it deserved.

They're pop/rock-friendly, but not necessarily with new music
That's why I don't understand the hate towards Clear Channel CHR's, but not as much for Cumulus - at least they added these tracks on some, or many of their stations...
