Many of them hold the extremist ideology.
For damn sure. McCarthyism will look like a cakewalk by comparison.
Hmmm, will it? We’re already seeing the acquiescence of media. I’m not so sure we’ll legitimately see the full scope. There is no obvious Murrow out there who will speak truth to power like he did.
My concern is we get a glossed-over, euphemism-laden soft-pedaling of the horror show, and dutiful diminishing of those who push back.
When we’re already seeing “bothsiderism” from the press regarding the likes of RFK Jr and his dangerous lies as if they’re legitimate claims…it does not portend a vibrant, vigorous response from the press down the road. When the sitting vice president contradicts the constitutional system of oversights and checks-and-balances by flat-out lying about the role of the courts as it relates to executive power and is barely fact-checked by the press, what exactly is the reason to think they will stand firm in the face of withering pressure to call out overreach and illegal actions in the future?
At least in the midst of McCarthy’s and Hoover’s reigns of abuse, Murrow, with the resources of the network, laid bare what was going on. We’re already seeing the groundwork laid to ensure there is no repeat.
