NESN begins spring training without Jerry Remy

NESN is televising their first spring training game tonight (started a few minutes ago at 7pm).

Don Orsillo opened by saying Jerry Remy wasn't there but I was only half listening and didn't catch the actual reason (if there was one). But he said that "Jerry will be back soon we hope". Sounded almost ominous. Maybe he's having back problems again or perhaps there's a family emergency although hopefully not.

I'm guessing this was sudden and they probably expect him back soon; otherwise, they might (even for spring training) have sent Dennis Eckersley or Jim Rice down there to fill in. The next NESN broadcast is Sunday.

Instead, they have a rotating circle of reporters filling in tonight. Joe McDonald from a Rhode Island newspaper is first up.

Heidi Watney is down there taping weekly Sox shows. You'd think they might have her join Don in the booth. I'm sure she has alot of baseball insight to contribute. ;D

Update: Don just mentioned that Jerry is home in Boston recovering from an infection he got while on vacation.

Update again: Heidi now giving us her first report. She looks good as always. I'd like to see her tanlines. Sorry, did I just say that? ::)

Yes, Don mentioned that Jerry 'acquired' a virus while vacationing and is now recovering at home in Weston.

Yes, Heidi is lovely. Always. Have you seen Hazel on MLB Network? Looked like she didn't miss many snacks since leaving NESN. She's getting hefty.
