NESN Stoops to a new low

Good evening. I have to lodge a formal complaint to the people who run NESN. Tonight (Monday), they were airing the ball game between the Red Sox and the Twins. While this game is being played in Minneapolis, what do I see on my screen behind home plate? A MASSACHUSETTS LOTTERY AD? If this were a home game at Fenway, I'd have no problem with it. For those who weren't watching, the ad was done in chroma key fashion, kind of like what FOX does during their baseball coverage. Another check just now (9:50 PM) had an in-house ad running. This is totally pathetic!

It's totally pathetic for NESN to make money? Wait...what? That's the point of the chroma key behind home plate. Genius idea. It allows both networks to insert their own ads.

This has happened before. When Dice K has pitched there were Japanese ads behind home plate
for audiences in Japan (but I think they may have shown up here, too).
I think they had some away games and an ad for the 99 showed up--in an area where the chain
has no locations.

Speaking of making money, I remember when NESN used to be a premium network on cable. I was living in central CT at the time (TCI, or AT&T cable) and they charged about $10/month for NESN. Then around the early to mid 90's they were brought down to basic cable. Was NESN a premium channel on other cable systems?

NESN was indeed a premium service here in New Britain for then-TCI Cablevision. Disney Channel was also a premium service here as well. Anyways, on a regional level like this, I feel those ads that are at the stadium should be let through as if you're at the game. Last time I checked, I haven't seen YES doing this during Yankees games.

Its was on most cable systems.

As for the ads? You'd see it all any station airing a game, if the park has those ad boards, they're going to be used. No getting away from it.

please. virtual ads have been part of sox telecasts since the late 90's. other teams in baseball use it on their local broadcasts, too. who cares if the game is home or away. the ad is targeting local viewers and the spot is sold as part of team's local tv revenue. does it mean sox radio broadcasters can't do drop-in ads for mass lottery if the game is played in minnie. this is a silly thread. why are you making a big fuss about it?

Agreed. What is the big deal? Weren't you watching the game. I for one would not be paying attention to the ads.

I had the game on for a minute or so. It was while another show was in commercial. (You know...the traditional 30-second spot kind?) I just got irritated because it was the first instance of advertising on this level I had seen.

I'd suggest having these company banners and names all over the place cheapens the television product. The behind-the-plate one is the worst, it makes it harder to see the ball. At what point did debasing your product for maximum money become the goal of television?

The second someone realized they could make money by putting commercials on TV.

I think whatever game had the green screen type thing was also a game being broadcasted on ESPN. If they didn't put their own ads up, you would have seen a green screen behind home plate the whole game. So NESN has the resources, they might as well use the green screen ESPN was using too.

More power to NESN to keep their paying clients happy and make more money!
What's wrong with that?

Advertising overload?
Think, NASCAR
