NESN'S Remdawg still out sick

Jerry Remy is still out sick from NESN's Red Sox telecasts. He's been out a good week and a half. Various people have sat in as Don Orsillo's analyst including Nick Cafardo and Peter Abraham from the Boston Globe; Peter Gammons (last night) and Dennis Eckersley (tonight) from NESN; and a few different people while the Sox were in Chicago and Minnesota.

Peter and Dennis will be sharing the duties next week as the Remdawg continues to battle a sinus infection and hopes to return to the booth on May 10th.

Hopefully, a sinus infection is all it is. I don't think Jerry has missed this much time since the bout with cancer and depression a couple or three years ago when he missed a good chunk of the season.

i know this might sound wrong but, when do you think he will retire?? i know hes the so called president of RSN,but he misses time every year,i know its not his fault but i'm sure all the traveling and various weather climates don't help!!

This is his 24th year on NESN and is very popular. I can't imagine that he would ever be forced out by ownership unless they want a massive public relations disaster on their hands.

But you are right. Between his back, his knees, and various other ailments, his health is catching up to him the last couple of years.

My guess is that, given his "stature" as president of Red Sox Nation, he'd be allowed to somewhat dictate when he might retire or even cut back on his schedule. Maybe he might at some point cut back and serve more as an ambassador, who knows.

I will say that it's refreshing to hear 'new' voices as the analyst. There's also less 'funny' or nonsense stuff happening between Orsillo and the guest analysts which is good. I often think Don and Jerry oughta just shut up and say nothing rather than talking about some of the dumb things they do talk about.

They should professionalize NECN's presentation. It's going to be tough year. It may behoove them to think about how they want to deal with failure. Having stuff like kids asking questions isn't the way to go.

2013 could bring change to the booth for several reasons. I hope Jerry is feeling better because it looks like a substandard 2012.

Blackroc, it's NESN..New England Sports Network. NECN is New England Cable News. ;)

I wouldn't be so quick to shove Jerry Remy out the door of the TV booth.

I'm old enough to remember what it was like BEFORE Jerry Remy.....when former Sox catcher Bob Montgomery was in that booth. Dear Lord Jesus.....THOSE WERE AWFUL YEARS ! ! ! And I thought they would NEVER end.

"Rem-Dawg" is far from perfect. But.....Remember the old Irish expression:..."Be Careful What You Wish For....For You Shall Surely Get It!"

I remember Monty as well. He had his bad moments but I liked him. I thought he was better with the late Ned Martin than he was with Sean McDonough, though.

I go back to the Dick Stockton/Hawk Harrelson days when I was a kid. We've been through alot of broadcast teams, that's for sure, between Channel 38, NESN and other local channels in between:

Dick Stockton/Hawk Harrelson
Ned Martin/Hawk
Ned/Monty
Ned/Remdawg
Bob Kurtz/Remdawg (was never a fan of Kurtz, probably my least favorite Sox tv announcer)
Sean McDonough/Monty
Sean/Remdawg
Don Orsillo/Remdawg

Am I missing anyone?

Of course, I was just a little bitty thing at the time....but there was also the late Curt Gowdy.

I would have to say my favorite TV team of recent memory was McDonough/Remy...hands down.
And thanks for reminding me of Bob Kurtz....I liked him even LESS than Monty.

Now...if we could only do something about Joe Castiglione over on the radio side ;)

Gowdy was before my time.

I liked McDonough as an announcer but he often felt the need to be controversial I think with many of his comments and it often seemed, to me anyway, that those comments made Jerry very uncomfortable.

And Monty never really jelled with Sean. He was just fine with Ned Martin and I suppose it's possible that he might have expected to get the lead announcer position after Ned was forced out so I suppose it's possible he felt threatened by the new young guy. Sean was only about 26 when he was hired by Channel 38 replacing Ned who got bumped strictly to NESN.

And Bob Kurtz. The major thing I hated about his delivery was calling people by 'kiddie' names. If the player's first name was Tim, he would call him Timmy. Stuff like that.

Joe Castiglione has been calling Sox games on radio longer than Jerry has been analyzing on tv. I don't often listen to the games on radio but I've never had a problem with Joe in the few times I've heard him. Joe will probably be there until Joe feels he can no longer do the job.

Decided to do a little research on McDonough and found this story on Boston.com from 2011. I found the responses to the story more informative than the story itself. Depending on whom you believe, Sean was let go because: he was making too much money; he was way too candid and controversial; he got where he was because of his father (the late Will McDonough, a sports writer for the Boston Globe); once Will died, Sean had nothing to fall back on and people got back at him for his over the top attitude.

What I didn't realize was that Sean was apparently the first person to use the term "RemDawg". And many people feel that Jerry Remy needs to go and Sean was one of the best, if not THE best, broadcaster the Sox ever had.

he was making too much money
He turned down more money elsewhere. He would have stayed for less.

he got where he was because of his father
I'd disagree there, completely. But it may be that his father's death allowed people in the biz to drop him --without worrying about Wil-- due to more annoying aspects of his private life. I believe he lost an NFL job as well as RS. The Henry Group prob' didn't like Wil and vice versa.

It's ironic that NESN might have to handle a lost season during the anniversary year of Fenway. The first thing they should do is stop repeating the sellout numbers and just shut up about it until the streak is over
