Network in the station's name

Re Raleigh/Durham: WRAL identifies by its call letters;
in Greensboro, WFMY identifies as "WFMY News 2."

And don't forget that in Atlanta WSB is still "Channel 2
(as in Channel 2 Action News)"; WXIA is still "11 Alive."

WALA-TV in Mobile has been broadcasting with the brand name "FOX 10" since 1996, when it became a FOX affiliate and WPMI-TV became an NBC station (WPMI-TV is now known as "Local 15" rather than "NBC 15", its previous brand name). WEAR-TV in Pensacola, Florida uses the brand name "WEAR ABC 3" during programming promotions.

Even more interesting is when an O&O still uses its call sign on air, which is the case with a few CBS O&Os. WBZ used "CBS 4" for a few years, then dropped it and went back to its calls. KDKA and WCCO switched to the new O&O news theme and graphics, but also got to keep their calls on air. WJZ's still using its calls too.

people are attached to the old Westinghouse brandings

Very much so. Somehow CBS was able to peel the long time usage of the calls letters of KYW-TV and the "Channel 5" branding from KPIX-TV. I guess people in Philly and the Bay Area didn't care as much as Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Boston about their CBS stations' branding.

What might be much more enlightening would be to find the markets that have retained local identities on a majority of their signals. I'll bet we won't come up with too many. Even San Francisco, which used to be pretty independent, now has "CBS 5" and "ABC 7" and "NBC Bay Area" (or is it "NBC 11" again?) and "CW Bay Area."
Actually, in the SF Bay Area, KTVU has become branding bi-polar. When referring to Fox programming, they brand as "Fox 2." but on any local programming, including local news, they stick to the old fashioned "KTVU, Channel 2."

Yes, calls are still important here in late 2011.

I appreciate that some stations still have pride and confidence in their calls. Perhaps these will stand out in these network times. I would hope for such, and think this can still be a great local identifer.
