DVR Solution
The on-screen, on-line and DVR program data comes from Tribune Media.
What you pay a monthly fee for is the program guide.
Some of the cable-provided DVRs are POS boxes and TiVo rip-offs. You don't need to use the cable-provided DVR. I'd recommend looking into TiVo. Better yet, look into DirecTV or Dish Network, too.
According to some posts on the TiVo forum, the problem of shows not recording despite a Season Pass (TiVo's term for recording a series) is when a change is made to the original listing in the program guide data. If the network or station changes the listing (which they send to Tribune Media) it may cancel the recording as scheduled but the Indexing feature is set not to re-schedule an episode once it has been canceled. What has worked for some people is to Clear All Program Information and To Do Lists (including Season Passes) and then reschedule everything. The DVR is a computer. Sometimes re-booting works. Sometimes you need to do a clean re-install.
But when this happens, it's not the fault of network starting times. Actually, the networks have been doing odd beginning and end times on series for a while now. It's just this season that they give Tribune Media (and DVR users) accurate schedules. Before I had to adjust each recording manually because I kept missing the beginning or ending of certain shows.
And some advertisers are including content you can only see during Fast Forwards and sometimes teasing you to look for hidden content you can only see in slow motion or frame by frame. You can count on advertisers to come up with new ways to get your attention.

Must be a problem with your DVR'S. I have time warner and simply select the program in my guide and add it to the record list. If The news is on at 10:00pm, but doesn't start until 10:01, I simply have to fast-forward a minute when i play it back. Regardless, I have a "block" of time to select, or I can manually schedule I believe.

But do they actually tell the schedule services that it starts that late? If they don't - which is virtually 100% if it's unanticipated or unpredictable - of course you wouldn't have that problem.

Tivo has gotten much better (more accurately, Tribune Media has gotten better or the networks are more accurately reporting their schedules). Several shows this season are listed as starting at 10:01 (or whatever), including ER. Last season ER was listed as starting at 9:59. Supposed that was so they could get in an extra spot. Now it's shorter. Wonder why?
