Network TV stations in mono

Ever since I moved to my new home and bought an outdoor antenna, I've noticed there are quite a few network stations (minus TBN, Daystar, and religious independents) still broadcasting without a stereo signal. I actually found this quite surprising this day in age.

Here are some I found near the Lafayette, IN area still not in stereo...

WTWO ch. 2 Terre Haute, IN (NBC)
WTVW ch. 7 Evansville, IN (Fox)
WILL ch. 12 Urbana, IL (PBS)
WHMB ch. 40 Indianapolis, IN (LeSea/religious)
WIPX ch. 63 Bloomington/Indianapolis, IN (i)

What network or commercial independent stations in your area are still not broadcasting in stereo?

WRDM-LP (Telemundo/Jewlery Television) channel 13 Hartford, CT

My known list

> WJKT UPN 16 in Jackson, TN
>

WTEN 10 Albany, NY (And satellite WCDC 19).
WSHM-LP 67 Springfield, MA.
WYPX 55 Amsterdam, NY (Last I knew, but it could be the cable system).

Here is a new one however,
WDMR-LP 65 is transmitting a SAP channel but in mono...

Mono Stations...what about Digital TV?

Which relays WRDM-LP (TEL) channel 13 of Hartford, who also is in mono but uses the SAP channel.

This leads me to a side question...how does a station's mono signal affect their simulcasted digital and/or HD signal, if at all? Isn't a true HD signal supposed to have 5.1 audio?

No, a digital feed only has to provide 2.0 audio. Most programming does not come with 5.1 audio, though it is available (for example, the Fox Splicer which is used to inject Fox HD, comes with 5.1 support, but is the only network to build such support in, the all affiliates of the other networks must make their own judgement and buy it themselves).

But I do know that many stations that never went to stereo on analog will do so with digital. For example, WSET-13 ABC in Lynchburg/Roanoke, VA has never done stereo, but on the digital side, does do it.

keep in mind...

Keep in mind that while a given station may be transmitting a stereo signal,
it does not necessarily mean that everything you hear is actually stereo.
If you get the signal via cable, the local cable co. may not be re-transmitting it in stereo. Certain programs/spots, etc. may not be recorded in stereo to begin with. It is only true stereo if the stereo audio is maintained all the way through the chain to the viewers.

Take Letterman's late night talk show, for example. A true stereo mix would put the person who is screen right mostly on the right channel, screen left on the left channel (through the use of pan pots). Often, the guests are mono in BOTH channels, but the band is a true stereo mix...

WVCY-TV, ch. 30 Milwaukee.

Thou they managed to get there DTV signal on the air months before Sinclair's 2 stations WVTV-18 and WCGV-24 put there DTV on in March 2003.

WVCY-DT indicates "Stereo" but no notice of any 2 track audio. Their analog does not generate a pilot signal.
