Networking and Automation

I live in the UK and here we have a serious issue with automation and networking. I can pick up about 3-4 stations playing exactly the same automated program though not for the same area and some stations only have 4-5 hours of live programmign a day? How many major companies are there and do they have networked shows a lot of the time? I'm aware of talk shows such as Rush Limbaugh that is networked but do stations suffer from a lack of live local content?
