Never got into much listening to oldies

I don't get oldies stations and how this format succeeds. They don't play any new music so why does it bill well? I mean like other people have said who wants to hear old, old songs today?

I don't "get" ANY kind of restrictive format. I want to hear the new mixed in with the merely old AND the truly ancient.
To each their own preference. I'm sure many people would feel MY choice in recordings are not even "music", and I'm sure
there are those who would think YOUR choice in recordings are not "music".

I question why "oldies" must bore us to death with the same 500. I know the stock answer, but it's a self-defeating argument.

If I need to hear "Satisfaction" again, let it be the version by Joe Pass, or even better, the Phyllis Diller version.

Wow!
I LOVE oldies. They make me think of when I was a kid and really good times. Carefree. Johnny Horton, Buddy Holly, The group Chicago, Elvis, lots more. Great music production, too. Most "remakes" of oldies stink.

I could hear the xylophone at the beginning of Jo Staffors's "You Belong to Me" and after the 8 thousandth play, still go, "MMMMMMMMM!" Les Paul and Mary Ford, Harry James, Frank Ifield. THAT'S talent!

I NEVER listen to fm. The only radio I want is wgn, (they are the greatest) and Jeff Rollins on Adult Standards, plus the local weather.

I have an i-pod w/2000 songs and I don't need some "25 year old expert" telling me what I want to hear. This is when "music was music" -not todays crap. O, and you kids, "get off of my lawn."

I also love Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw (Begin the Beguine and many others), Tommy & Jimmie Dorsey (Tea for Two Cha Cha, So Rare and June Night),Perez Prado, Dean Martin, Kay Starr, Frankie Laine, Jo Stafford, and of course (as Tony Soprano would say) "Frank."

Talk radio is way too many opinionated blowhards talking at once. Sports radio is too many idiotic brainless blowhards talking at once. I can get that from people I work with. Sports is really a worse industry than even radio. Too many people in love with themselves.

You may disagree with my taste, but you have your taste. too, that probably doesn't come up to my standards. I really don''t care what you like.

I'm 60 plus 4 months. Radio has abandoned me. So what? NO radio station meets my music taste, so screw them. I LOVE oldies...the ones I choose!

They may not play any "new" songs, but so what? There are plenty of unplayed oldies out there that they could rediscover!

Will Lady Gag-Ga be getting her "music" re-released in 40 years the way the Beatles are now? Will anyone even be talking about Lady Gag-Ga in 40 years as much as they are talking about the Beatles now? Will anyone even remember Lady Gag-Ga 40 years from now? ::)

There are many of us that can't stand rap or that hip hop crap and we enjoy the music of our youth. And there are LOTS of us around today. Music triggers memories in most people, and many of us "old folks" enjoy the music that we listened to when we are younger.....In addition, oldies stations do NOT bill that well. Advertisers don't want to support stations who market to "older" listeners.

I PROMISE that when "my ship comes in", my radio station will serve those listeners with appreciation for what is currently missing from the airwaves. Anyone else already hears what they want ( according to the consultants) and I won't be doing it for the money.
I plan to LOSE money at it, and have the time of my life. Gotta have a dream, right?

Ahhhh, the days of real musical instruments, when a female artist was a lady who didn't have to wear a thong and platform shoes while she rode a pole to get a sale; and a male artist didn't have to gyrate while cupping his hand over his leather...well...this is a clean board - just like good old 50s, 60s and 70s music, with a nominal sprinkling of way early 80s are clean. You must be listening to teeny bopper types who play games to distract your attention from the fact that they don't have a clue or any talent.

Oldies, wanna know why I play them?
they are good. They are ACTUALLY MUSIC. not someone scratching on a record talking about how many hoes he can buy.

The music for the most part was clean (between the lines man)
The morals during that time were better families were families.
Radio was king and if the song was dirty it wasn't played and therefore never sold.

That pretty much sums it up. The young ones coming along today on the radio missed the best of it. It's been cheapened.

OTOH, how many artists from 40 years ago have the ongoing fame as the Beatles? A handful, that's about it. I don't see people waiting in line to buy the remastered Tee Set collection or the ultimate Cowsills box set.

So you don't like Lady Gaga. How does that differentiate you from the oldsters in 1956 who hated Elvis? Or the Beatle-bashers in 1964? Etc., etc., etc.
Maybe she'll be remembered in 2049, maybe she won't. I probably won't be around to find out. :-\ Not many people remember Marianne Faithful either. There will never be "another Beatles". Times have changed and there is no such thing as a mass-appeal artist anymore. Just because you don't like today's music doesn't make it crap any more than my father disliking the Rolling Stones made them crap.

Are you crazy, OldBones? The Tee Set?? One hit wonder Ma Belle Amie. You forgot to mention Roy Head's Greatist Hits ------err Hit.

Lady Gaga will be remembered allright along with Milli Vanilli and Co.

Why mention Marianne Faithful and the Rolling Stones just because she and Mick had a thing going on?

Everybody and Mick had a thing going on.

I think one can pretty much discern the relative quality of yesterday's popular music with today's by taking a survey of the marketing types using theme music in their ads. These are big-bucks adverts by folks who want the listener/viewer to enjoy, remember and purchase their products.

60's/70's would win in a landslide over the garbage produced since 1990.

Miss the point much?  There's nobody out there right now who will be worth remembering in 40 years!
