Never knew you can have 4 HD's

Was in Baltimore today and scanned the dial... I could not believe Rock 98 WIYY has four HD-s...HD-2 is Classic Rock, HD-3 is Alternative and HD-4 is WBAL. So how many HD's can you squeeze into the frequency...this can open the Philly market wide...you can have Metal, Country Classics, 50's-60's Oldies, Comedy, Real Alternative, Standards and much much more, Satellite radio would not be needed, you can have endless format variety. So like I still claim HD is great for radio and should be a top priority to gain listeners without any fees...

You could have 10 subs if you wanted to sound that bad. There's no free lunch and you can only pack
x amount of data into x amount of bandwidth.
I bet all 4 sound gritty.

WJFK in Washington D.C. also has an HD4...

IMO, they should just limit it to HD3. An HD4 sounds useless...

Out here in the hinterlands (central Jersey Shore) HD reception is hit or miss, except for the two locals offering it (WJRZ and WRAT). Sooooo...I won't be canceling my XM subscription just yet!

Did not listen that long but the sound was very good, stereo separation and no distortion...also on the HD-4 the talk sounded fine...You can just tune into local WSTW they have 1-2-3 and all sound perfect from 20 some miles away on a small tower...

The Baltimore station is one of three with HD4s that I know of.

WJFK was the first, and our local pubcaster just lit up HD4 with a news stream (WKSU and its simulcasters in Northeast Ohio). I don't know which came first, WIYY or WKSU and its four full-power simulcasters.

I don't think anyone has tried 4 music stations yet. WIYY is three music stations and a talk station. WJFK-FM is four talk stations.

All of the Philly stations have no more than HD-2 and they all play some sort of music, but its mostly the typical urban bull crap, BEN, Wired, USL, IOQ, DAS and 106.1....MMR, MGK and RFF are Rock oriented and then there is WYSP which has 3, KYW and WIP, the B is not bad doing the 80's and the only time OGL sounds good is when they run Casey's top 40, the non coms are take it or leave it. R1 properties dont have any 2's in fact I dont think R1 has any stations with an HD-2 except for one down in their hometown of Baltimore. I think they should add HD-3 and 4 and beef up the music for people who dont like urban formats....which we have plenty of..

Wrong WYSP has WIP on their HD3.

That is what I wrote, YSP is HD-1, KYW is HD-2 and WIP is HD-3..

I managed to pick up WIYY's 4 HDs last night during the tropo opening. As I expected, it sounded bad on each HD.

I should have tried that! The analog WIYY sounded great and was banging in here at the Shore, as were the Balto. TV stations.

Why does Philadelphia have no smooth jazz station on an HD? When WJJZ first went off of 106.1, then 106.1 HD-2 picked it up. But then when 97.5 came about, 106.1 HD-2 picked up Spanish. But then 97.5 dropped smooth jazz and everyone stayed as is, leaving no smooth jazz on HD in Philly, even though practically every other city that dropped smooth jazz, at least has it on an HD side channel. Even tiny Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has an HD side channel and Harrisburg has a smooth jazz on a regular channel! Man, smooth jazz really got the rip off in a city that used to have it as a top 5 format.

Makes sense, WB has a good SJ station WILK 103.1-HD-2, and they have a fantastic signal for a small tower with a four bay.

I just visited the WIYY website, they have all 4 HD's on line to listen live, I had their HD-2 Classic Rock and HD-3 Indie Rock and also WBAL on HD-4, this is really cool. I think every station should have their HD's on line if they have them....and on line the sound is fantastic...

HD stations get more listeners in cars via the online stream than via HD radios. There are more iPhones than HD radios. The web streams are limited by the bandwidth of the station's internet connection, not by the HD bandwidth. A station can stream an unlimited amount of side channels without sacrificing quality.

You are probably right, you must remember, rotary phones have been in use for over 100 years, there are still some real old folks using them today...HD is relatively new, I think it will get off the ground and flourish, once there is more niche programming and stronger signals are put into use. I dont know why this board is so anti-HD, do you all want to listen to an urban wasteland on the FM band....at least when you go to pro-urban cities, like NY and DC, you have their HD-2's, 3's and 4's that play "OUR KIND OF MUSIC AND CULTURE"....
