Never talk smack about the Simpsons

H

H-Wood

Guest
I started a thread about the fun that we had as teenagers with WIYQ-FM.

Cary and Betty went on vacation, Ted and I changed the format. There have been people who actually worked with us during our 8 months of fun who have posted their fun filled comments.

There are people who have taken a chance to blast the Simpsons.

I will tell you this, the Simpsons are family to me. If you worked with the Simpsons and got fired, you had no business being in radio to begin with.

Cary is the nicest most sincere man I have ever met. He let me on the air at 14 and helped form who I am as a person today. His AM stations are the most community oriented stations you will find.

There will never be a day that I will say anything bad about Cary Simpson.

The morons who are talking the smack better hope I never meet up with you especially when you are ballless enough to bash behind a fake name.

If you are going to bash, show some nads and sign your name.

I respect the hell out of Cary because he is the last of the truly independents. He overserves his communities and has done it himself. There are no Investment Bankers pulling the purse strings. Just a family man who looks at his long-time employees as family members.

When you have been a station owner for over 50 years, you might have the chance to say something. Until then, please shut the F**K up.

Harlow
I have the balls to sign my name too.

No smack, just fax

Didn't mean anything personal. People can be wonderful human beings and terrible broadcasters at the same time. Was just saying that WIYQ was always awful, as a radio station. And except for a brief period in the mid-nineties when somebody had a stroke of brilliance and WGMR suddenly was cool for a year or so, the rest of those stations have always been unlistenable, too. Didn't expect to trigger a defense from the son, either, but while he's paying attention, tell him to buy a good used tube for WTRN so it'll reach downtown Tyrone. What's it pumping out? 5 watts? Millionaires pinching pennies. But it's nice that they are nice people despite all that, and it's nice that you had fun as teenagers, playing radio while the adults were away. Thanks for sharing. All I meant was that it didn't translate to good radio.

Um..WGMR cool to listen to for a year??? You call that facts? hell you can't even spell Facts or FAX as you put it. GMR had one heck of a run as an Alternative station for nearly 10 years with some fansastic books and sales through the roof for years. When the wave died down and it made its move to CHR, its been trending upward each book since doing so. GMR's facilities are state of the art and the processing on the audio is superb having been in use in many major markets.

Taking what you say about the owners aside, which many of us do disagree with...you can't go hashing out FACTS and getting them wrong...a LOT of people seem to think GMR is quite listenable and has been for a long time.

And like I said earlier...ask the employees who work there today what they think of the place and they are quite happy to be here! Must be an AWFUL place to work when you look forward to coming in every day huh???

I can see that you can't tell the difference, so here's a hint: Shinola comes in a can.

Re: No smack, just fax

Yeah, they had one good year: around '97 or '98, wasn't it? Two good books in one calendar year. Got up to around #6 or #7. Come on, man. You were across the street back then, laughing your a** off at 'em for being in a format that had already died. And it took 'em another 6 or 7 years to finally figure it out for themselves. Now they're all the way up to #10. Hey, do something first, THEN start bragging. Like it or not, the reputation they built was one of a minimum wage shop. They became millionaires on the backs of minimum wage employees. If now they are paying competitive wages (What? $30,000+ for jocks in State College?), that's great. But that would be a big change. None of this is news. In fairness, I'm an outsider. Never had the privilege of working for AMN. Just grew up within earshot of their stations and had dozens of their employees tell me the horror stories. So I stayed away, just like you. Speaking of that, you've quit your other job now to do WGMR fulltime, right?

$30,000+ for jocks in State College? Who are you talking about? The range is $17000-$20000 average.

Millionaires on the backs of employees? Please. Everybody is free to sell their services to the highest bidder. At some point, we all have to decide if we're willing to work for what our employers are willing to pay us. If the answer is no, we're free to find a better offer, AMN employees included. They are there because they want to be, or because they won't change their situation.
I've had enough of the victim mentality crap.

OK, dumba**,

I grew up with Ted. The house on 5th Street in Tyrone is the one Cary and Betty lived in forever.

Millionaires, if Cary ever would sell, true. He never got rich off of paying less. This is a man who used his own money, used what the stations made to keep the network running.

I know for a fact, because for many many years, I saw the sales sheets. I knew what people made. I know the cost of operating 10 stations with staffs and for a long time, many of those 10 stations didn't bring in enough sales to match the salaries that were paid.

Come on you ballless wonder, pony up your pennies and operate radio stations out of your own pocket, not some BS Corporate Line of Credit like Forever.

I literally grew up in the AMN. Before the Frog came, WGMR was the #1 Station in State College for years and was Country.

Believe it or not, in 1987, WIYQ in our one book went from dead last to #3, even with the signal issues we had.

You accuse the Simpson's of making millions of paying jocks little money, but you have never met the Simpson's or worked for them. You are taking the word of dozens of former employees telling horror stories.

I never made more than minimum wage working for the AMN. Guess what, I didn't deserve to then. It was a training grounds. What I learned there helped me in college, the military, Altoona, Fayetteville NC, Gainesville, Fla., Altoona and now Milwaukee.

I'm on the air in market 33. You are on the air where?

I know most of the major players in the State College market or know their make up. Glen Turner is classy and wouldn't talk about someone. He works on his product and cares very little about who else was on.

Mike Donovan worked at WGMR when it was country and #1. Dave Shannon and Kevin Nelson wouldn't trash a man who has been honored by the National Association of Broadcasters and the Radio Advertising Bureau. The guys at 3WZ are a classy bunch.

Mr. Keystone Jock, I dare you to show some balls.
What time slot have you won? Where have you worked other than part-time somewhere in State? How many times have you been honored by National Broadcasting organizations?

Until you know something other than being able to program your car radio, please shut the hell up and learn something.

I just can't stand people who don't know crap blowing off like they know it all.

I've been doing this almost 25 years. Shut up and learn something.

Unlike Keystone Jock who throws stones, but hides behind a fake name
I'm Harlow and proud to be an alum of the AMN

I totally respect your opinion dude, I really do, but do you have the nads to post an address and phone number too?

Also, it's bad form to be so negative about other humans if you have never tried to get to know them.

I can get behind Harlow on this one but you? Nah...you flip sides back and forth too much based on who will find favor with your statements because you can't take being challenged.

If you (the general "you") are making more than 30K in this market and you are still in your 20's, then you're the second coming and probably should be in a bigger market.

Harlow, if they trashed the name of someone nominated, I don't think they'd stop at an actual recipient of such an honor.

And you're right, none of these mentioned would stoop to that level. Two are seasoned veterans and one is a mature 30-something with his head on straight.

I know you were kidding. I was hoping the legendary KeystoneJock would be dumb enough to e-mail me.

Plus there are some people still on this board that I would actually like to hear from. Tor, if you are out there...

That would be great. Always like to hear from the man who created the famous "Kiss it Harlow" line on WIYQ.

I still have to laugh. People said how bad WIYQ was, we had the same playlist as Z-100. We did ok for a staff the average age of 20.

Interesting you would say that? I belive I have said since day ONE that the Simpsons are good people...I believe I have said since day ONE that I like working with them and I believe I have said since day ONE that I feel our product at G101 is a good solid product.

Yep...I have flip flopped a gazillion times on these issues...sure...and I have changed my screen name a few times too so I can be nice to someone in one post and slam them in another...ok!!! I have always been ME and have said what is on my mind while others here seem to play games posting under a different name for each opinion they wish to drop.

Hats off to Harlow and McCall and Turner and the others who come out from behind the names and speak their mind whether they agree or disagree with what people are saying. At least we know who they are. But then the names of many others on here are no big mysteries either if you read between the lines we all pretty much know who each other is anyway.

By the way for those who think that the AMN jocks are underpaid...just a little tidbit...when I was pulling down top night numbers at BHV under Galli's Ownership, I was making a whopping 13K a year and they thought that was good money. Take my talent fees into account and I hit 15-16 in a good year. The company was under a wage freeze for over 4 years!!! One may be interested to learn who some of the real penny pinchers were or are. Might want to dig a little deeper to see what's what before you sling that hash.
