New 105.1 Elkhart Translator

Just stumbled across this last night. New 105.1 FM translator is operational in Elkhart. Currently retransmittting its neighbor WFRN 104.7 FM, but only temporarily doing so according to WFRN's engineer. No other disclosed information. If anyone else can hear it, please post, or if anyone knows of what format/re-transmission will be on 105.1, please respond.

Looking at the info on file for this translator - http://www.recnet.com/cdbs/fmq.php?facid=150311&jaws=0 - it is another outpost of Edgewater Broadcasting, Inc. - part of the "Great Translator Invasion" of 2003.

My guess is that since WFRN's translator group "Friends of Christian Radio" (apparently) didn't want to buy it, that they are either waiting for a buyer, or waiting for a change in translator regulations that will allow them to use a satellite feed in the non-reserved band, at which point they could place Edgewater's own "Freedom Radio FM" programming on the translator. See more about that at http://www.freedomradiofm.com/ and http://www.edgewaterbroadcasting.com/ .

One other possibility is that Edgewater might try to use some creative engineering to move the translator down into the non-com band, which would then allow it to be satellite fed. Putting it on the air now, however, was required by the CP.

Looks like Edgewater also has a translator in a similar situation at 100.3 in Granger - http://www.recnet.com/cdbs/fmq.php?facid=152865&jaws=0 for more info.

It would have been nice if Edgewater could have carried WLFQ-LP 98.7 on both those translators. It would represent a real coverage area increase for them, as opposed to having even more frequencies simulcasting WFRN.

What I want to know is when WSHW plans to put those two translators in Logansport on the air, and whether they will both carry WSHW programming, or if they might bring some new formats to the area.

For the LP station, are you sure you are not meaning wcvm 94.7 FM out of Bronson instead of WLFQ-LP in Elkhart. The only thing weak about WLFQ is that their signal dies further out due east. It's pretty good south, west, and north.

I think this 105.1 will have some special programming on it, but WFRN's engineer could not disclose that. Time will tell, unless someone here knows.

it went back up on air within two hours. Still WFRN rebroadcast.

WLFQ-LP http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FL1028953.html

98.7 FM is a decent frequency ... no co-channel stations nearby so the signal goes until it fades instead of going until it is interfered with.

Yep, 105.1 FM is back ... someone must have been playing with the knobs. :)

If I were going to put filler on a station I would put something that no one would miss. If Edgewater's 105.1 and 100.3 flip to (theoretically) WLFQ-LP or even WLDC-LP from Goshen no one is going to miss the WFRN signals (on the 50kw station and two other translators in South Bend/Mishawaka).

BTW: I can hear both in their respective areas in my car with 100.3 from Granger fading at the St Joe/Elkhart county line and 105.1 reaching north to the toll road. My home radio is junky and could get 104.7 on 105.1 before the translator went on the air. :D

When did 100.3 go on the air? IS it too carrying WFRN?

Looks like (from the FCC website) that the license was filed for Granger on May 24th (accepted May 25th).
Not "Granted" yet, but the station can be on the air while the FCC checks over the paperwork.
Also per the FCC the Elkhart license was filed June 1st (accepted June 4th).

RecNet does not seem to track the applications, just the permits/licenses.

Yes, both are retransmitting WFRN.

I live 1 mi. inside the Elkhart county line and 10 min. from there, I could not pick up 100.3 FM. :(. However, new question, what is the latest on 92.5 FM in South Bend--are they on or not yet. Also will they still rebroadcast WCVM 94.7?

CSN filed a license to cover last Friday for 92.5 FM which was accepted (not granted yet) on Monday. Such a filing certifies that the station is built and ready to be put on air. It does not SPECIFICALLY state that the station will be placed immediately on air, but if the station is built, why not turn it on?

Here are all the apps for that license:
http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/app_list.pl?Facility_id=140817

And the coverage map:
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FX1035694.html

92.5 FM's construction permit states that is a translator of WCVM Bronson.

Apparently they have not flipped the switch on 92.5 FM (despite the license filing).

When on the air it should have the same coverage as 107.9 FM (same tower, antenna and power level). Driving around last night I couldn't hear 92.5 in areas where 107.9 was heard - I drove past the tower farm tonight (US20 at Grass Rd) and didn't get any better signal.

100.3 FM may be suffering from skip ... tonight I was getting Love FM out of Chicago and WLKI out of Angola mixing together instead of the far fringe signal of 100.3 FM out of Granger.

Well as of tonight/very early AM, 100.3 continues to retransmit WFRN. 92.5 is not yet on the air. However, I have noticed some hispanic music on 105.1 FM. Any official word as to if this is the programming. It seems to be distant at times, and very strong at others-especially the last two mornings.

If anyone knows, please post.

You can pick up 100.3 now? Earlier in the thread you were having problems.
Agree on 92.5 ... I don't check daily, but have not heard any RF out of it.

105.1 FM has been silent for a day or more - the 105.1 you're hearing is someone else:
WOJO - Evanston (Chicago) -- See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WOJO

Other 105.1 FMs in the area ...
Horizon Christian Fellowship has a signal in Dowagiac that must be on the air by Sunday.
W286AW http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/fmq?list=0&facid=150329

Edgewater had a station in Three Rivers that needed to be built by 6/1/07 (likely abandoned).
W286AR http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/fmq?list=0&facid=150335

The closest full power stations would be ...
K105FM - WQHK-FM - Decatur (Fort Wayne) [I've heard this in Goshen]
Magic 105.1 - WMGC FM - Detroit
Hoosier Country 105 WHCC-FM - Bloomington

Listen for the legals near the top of the hour or any other liners you can understand. If it is WOJO you should hear them talking about Chicago.

luckily, I have been able to pick it up (Not perfectly). As far as 105.1, it sounds like it's the Chicago station.
