Pirate? Or new station? I have been picking up a station on 106.5....last night it started coming in around I-55 and Bolingbrook and came in clearer the further south I went. They are playing classical music....no liners...no nothing...just classical...some dead air and then the next classical song.

It is coming in good again today....anyone else know about this?
______________

With spacing between Lansing 106.3 and Des Plaines 106.7, I say its either a pirate or a LPFM.

You didn't have any skip did you? I think we have a rather high powered translator for NPR Classical on 106.5 up here in Rockford.. (Repeats an NIU station, iirc, as Rockford does not have an NPR (or PBS) of it's own)

WNIU's repeater is at 105.7 (they list it next to the main 90.5 frequency).

STARadio's WXNU St. Anne

This is WXNU St. Anne, apparently testing with classical music. I am getting it slightly stronger in Monee than 101.7 WIVR, which transmits from roughly the same area as WXNU.

STARadio recently began working harder to get this newly-allocated station up and running.

Interesting....thanks for the info Phil...I wonder what the format of this new station will be?
______________

Unless they intend to "do it better," it would be suicide to try AC, Hot AC, or Country in the Kankakee area. Potpourri which is covered by Nine and The Valley would be an even bigger loser.

I was amazed how well WXNU's reception is in Lowell, despite WSRB's signal being much stronger, and running IBOC on 106.3. But now that 106.5 is on the air, I will have a difficult time DX'ing 106.7 as 106.5 bleeds over on 106.7. I normally would get WPPN Des Plaines in Lowell, despite a very weak signal, but I would also occasionally get WGLM from West Lafayette. Now that'll be difficult. While radio-locator shows them off the air, recnet.com has their estimated primary contour, and it looks like there will be secondary contour over Lowell for WXNU St. Anne. If any new 1st adjacents start getting allocated around the Kankakee/Watseka area in the near future, it's going to wreak havoc at getting Chicago stations, as WIVR is already affecting WTMX south of 133rd Avenue in Crown Point & Cedar Lake. I understand that that area isn't protected from interference, but it can be annoying though, and that area isn't fringe coverage though. In the case of WIVR, I wonder if they tweaked their tower to reach Kankakee better, while their signal is getting stronger in Lowell. I just hope WGFA doesn't increase their height, or WLIT might get affected too later on with their 50kw signal.

Actually, yes, a new allocation granted to Milner (owners of WVLI and WIVR) will go live on 103.3. The COL is Gilman, but the transmitter will be well north of there, fairly close to WXNU and WIVR. I'm sure that will cut up Kiss-FM in Kankakee County to a degree. Back when I lived in Manteno, 101.7 River Country caused a lot of interference to The Mix on several of my "less selective" radios (clock radio, Pioneer receiver, etc.). On the better quality receivers including a Sony Walkman, there was no problem getting 101.7 or 101.9 clearly.

Phil...check this out http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/app_det.pl?Application_id=1122145

Did they change the frequency to 103.7 now? Looks like there was a mod to this app on 4/3? I wonder what they are planning?
______________

I may not be Phil, but looking at the new app., it will have a directional pattern, looking like it'll have a null to the NE, to protect WXRD Crown Point. So if Milner is looking to put the new station on 103.7, they have to protect WXRD, which WXRD has primary contour over all of South lake County Indiana. I wonder if the original app. for 103.3 was for only 3kw, while the new one is for 6kw. Regardless of frequency, Milner's new station would have to protect another station, and in the case of the 103.3 allocation, they would have to protect WCSJ-FM on 103.1, and if they go on 103.7, then it's WXRD on 103.9.

It's really interesting that this area is getting so many new frequency allotments, given their close proximity to Chicago, C/U, and other markets. As far as I know, there are now 3 stations allotted to the Iroquois/Kankakee county area (95.9 Watseka, 103.7 Gilman, & 106.5 St. Anne). It'll be interesting to see what their respective owners have in store.I know that a classic rock format would be very well embrassed in the Watseka area, but what about the other stations? Like one of the previous posters said...everything else is pretty much being done unless these new stations plan to do it better.
