New 600 AM in Montreal ?

Anyone know if the new 600 AM in Montreal has begun testing yet ? Also when is the station suppose to begin broadcasting ? Any updated info. ?

It's not on yet. They're still getting stuff together before launch which should be some time this fall. They are planning to launch with their sister station at 940 which will have a much better signal at 50,000 watts full time non-directional. If you start hearing French talk on 940, then it's a go0d bet that 600 is also on.

AM 850, also owned by the same people, was formally licensed by the CRTC today (6/19), meaning four new AM stations coming to Montreal soon (counting CHRF, Evanov's gay-oriented station).

The numbers in that report should turn around significantly once TTP Media launches 850 and 940. As it stands now the only commercial French language AM station left in Montreal is All Traffic CKAC 730 (along with suburban stations CJMS 1040 & CJLV 1570 to a lesser degree). The new TTP and Evanov stations "should" repatriate French listeners with the AM band in that city if the product is good and it's promoted effectively.

I believe when it signed off, CFCF 600 Montreal ran 10,000 watts by day and 5000 watts at night. Will 600 still have the same power? Will the new station be able to claim it is "Canada's First Station" as CFCF liked to say? OK, it's not really the same station, although the station that became CFCF was not originally on 600 and had the call sign XWA.

And the original 850 CKVL ran 50,000 watts nights and 10,000 watts by day. Again, will that remain?

I believe 940 is slightly nulled to the southwest to protect 940 XEQ Mexico City. Not sure if that's at all times or just nights. 940 was originally considered a Class I-B station. 690 was Class I-A with a non-directional antenna.

With a city the size of Montreal, it would make sense for it to have two English Talk stations (CJAD and 600) and two in French (CHMP and 940) as well as two Sports stations (English 690 and French 850). Vancouver has two Sports stations, although it has only one Talk station. Toronto has two Talk stations and two Sports stations.

I would also be interested to know what power will the new 600 AM be ? Also will the new station on 600 AM be streaming right away when they begin broadcasting ?

600 is supposed to be the same pattern and powre as the old 600 while 850 will be 50,000 watts (days) / 22,000 watts (nights)

What is the deal with 690? It seems like the old 690 had a much better signal...at least to the south in the states. What are the current call letters of 690 anyway?

The CBF incarnation of 690 was a non-directional signal. Great for the sort of wide-area coverage CBC/Radio-Canada wanted from that station in the days before FM relays in every nook and cranny of Quebec, as well as for coverage into the US. But when CBF moved to FM in 1999 and the frequency went to a commercial operator, there was no value to that wide-area signal. What did have value was a more concentrated signal into the urban core of Montreal, and so CINF operated a two-tower directional array that focused its signal northward into the city from its Kahnawahke transmitter site on the south shore (two towers of the old CFCF/CIQC 600 array, in fact).

After CINF failed, the frequency became open again, and when CKGM got it for the move from 990, the new 690 facility was built using several of the former 990 towers. It's also south of Montreal, beaming north.

It may beam north, but the signal of CKGM in Ottawa, 2 hours straight west is identical to CINF's signal, and it's quite go0d here. In the office building I work in, it is the 4th strongest AM signal...doing better than 1000 watters 1350 and 1670. For some reason it really has great penetration into buildings AM doesn't go into from such a long way away. I was about 20 minutes east of Ottawa last week, and the signal was the best on the dial. It put the local 50 kw stations to shame.

Going back to 600. I very highly doubt I'll be hearing much, if any thing, out of it here.

And now I understand that 990 is likely to be moved back to 980 once again? How will this new 980's pattern be in contrast with the old 980-CKGM's pattern????
