new 620 wdae morning show

Tampa Bay Times sportswriters Tom Jones (bottom right) and Rick Stroud (right) will star in a new weekday morning show for sports radio station WDAE-AM (620), sparking a closer alliance between the newspaper and station owner Clear Channel Radio. The pair begin hosting their three-hour show at 6 a.m. Tuesday (5/22), taking the timeslot once held by Dan Sileo — a former professional and college football player who was fired March 13 after inadvertently calling three black football players “monkeys” in a passing reference. The announcement of the new show was delivered after days of fanfare at 4 p.m. today during WDAE afternoon guy Steve Duemig's show.

I know both of them fairly well, and I like them personally, but I'm not sure how well this one's going to work over time.

What leads you to believe it's brokered programming? The story says they're being paid. Do you know something specific, or are you just throwing stuff out there and speculating for giggles?

They're being "paid" by the Tampa Bay Times, not by CC. It's the same deal with the Orlando Sentinel paying 740 the Game to put Mike Bianchi on every morning, or Sunshine Network paying for Clark and Davis to be the morning hosts.

Do you honestly think 620 pays for Rock Riley to be the weekend morning host? No, that's Bright House paying to put him on.

Hmmm. That would be interesting if that's how the deal was structured. An early version of the story implied they would be paid as CC employees, but the current version does not explicitly say that now. Hmmm, indeed.

One of the reasons you hire writers is that while you have to pay them, you don't have to pay them full-time money. CBS is hiring a lot of writers and TV guys on their FM sports talkers in other markets.

Tis done. There is no sense furthering your education in Radio/Mass Communications. All you need to do is write for a newspaper, and hopefully you too can enjoy working a morning drive radio show in a medium market.

Funny how this comes on the heel of Warren Buffett buying Media General...except for the Trib...which I'm thinking that paper wont be around in a couple of years. Now The Times has entered into the unholy relationship with Clear Channel, pretty much locking out The Trib's scribes from major on-air radio sports presence in this market.

I wonder how much space 620 will get in The Times? Last time this happened , Hubert Mizell was on am 820...and there was tons of news about the paper on the radio...but little or no mention of anything on am 820 in the paper...you didnt' even know who the radio co hosts were.

So, Tommy, how bad is sportsradio in this market now? I'm sure when it comes to 620, everything will be great.

Pleasantly surprised. The show is comfortable to listen to. Well produced and planned. For newspaper guys they really do a fine job and sound as if they've done this before. They don't get in each others way and the interviews are very well done. It's factual and informative. They sound as if they respect the listener. Real good job.

The guys might take some time to find their groove, but it's nice to hear a couple of guys who know sports. I think as they evolve the show will be very good. It's absolutely not brokered though.

And at least it should prevent at least one newspaper columnist from unloading (at least any further) disparaging and insulting comments about sports talk radio and its people in print...shouldn't it?
