NEW 890

Anybody know anything about a new 890 AM playing Vietnamese music?

Somewhere it has been posted that KTXV in Mabank is testing. Supposedly 20kw daytime signal, aimed up Highway 175 at DFW.

Can't make out anything on 890 here in Houston at a 2:15pm check, but the frequency is badly squeezed by locals on 880 and 900. Perhaps another check during critical hours.

Actually the testing has been going on for the better part of the year, from a site between Eustace and Athens. It sounds like they've got it working right now, ID'ing as "KTXV Mabank/Dallas-Fort Worth." Should be interesting to see how many miles they make it after dark when the power drops to 250 watts. Last I checked there wasn't a big Vietnamese community around Cedar Creek Lake.

890 booms nicely into Tyler. What is the signal pattern now? It'd have to be a narrow one.

I was curious about that, and the next time I'm in Tyler I'll check it out. The coverage map isn't posted on Radio-Locator yet, but the basic shape of the pattern is on this page: www.fccinfo.com/CMDProEngine.php?sCurrentService=AM&tabSearchType=Appl&sAppIDNumber=1126169&sHours=D
According to the application KTXV's city-grade signal in the WNW lobe crosses the southern part of Dallas County, and city-grade to the ESE makes it to the Henderson-Smith County line between Athens and Tyler. The pattern for the nighttime 250-watt pattern is directed mainly NW and SSE, as indicated on this page:
www.fccinfo.com/CMDProEngine.php?sCurrentService=AM&tabSearchType=Appl&sAppIDNumber=1126169&sHours=N
It will barely cover Mabank with enough of an interference-free signal.

I haven't read all the other responses... however, isn't there a Vietnamese station in Austin or somewhere around there? Just curious.

Sort of like Weatherford's 500 watt KZEE 1220 (8 watts nite) with their Asian/Indian "desi" format.
