New 97.1 The River still new??? It sounds dead!

If this is the case, look at all of the other listeners that they are missing by not having a much larger playlist! It just doesn`t make any sense to me.

Because obviously you know jack shit about radio or programming. There is absolutely no "proof" that larger playlists mean higher ratings. There is substantial proof for decades that smaller playlists lead to higher ratings.

Cox is taking more money out of the market than any other operator in town. If one of their stations needs fixing or adjusting, they'll do it.

Here's the point I think many here are missing: WE pay attention to what they are doing, what music is played and how often, how much talking they do and when the imaging fires off every hour. River, for most of its audience, is "audio wallpaper" so to speak. Most listeners don't really pay much attention to what's going on, just that it's familiar noise that's nice to listen to while doing whatever it is they do. Be it sitting in a waiting room, driving, or working around the house or office/shop/store, etc. It's the point I made in my last post. There's a reason they are successful being "boring". It's music that can be on in a public place and doesn't grate on most people's ears.

They still could lose the "New!" moniker though. Sort of like certain brands of laundry detergent. These brands have been around for generations and every now and then, it's "New!".

Personally, I think they keep "New" to save money on recording new imaging.

Here are my thoughts. This station just might have the highest profit % of any station in town. Good billings and no major costs. Was Lexi there only live jock? I don't really listen just flip through and catch a half song now and then. I think they do realize the competition though is heating up and they are not staying pat. that is wt Lexi is gone. They could have easily kept her on the cheap is my guess. They might be going for a little more personality in the morning. TRG I am sure made somewhat of a dent and S & V are down the hall. I predict a morning team, like a Kelly and alpha, light on banter, plenty of music. Their start date will coincide with an updated playlist. They rode this pony as far as they could without investing in it. Now is time to invest in it if they want to maintain the revenue stream.

From their ad on allaccess doesn't seem like they're searching for much more personality on air. I predict more of the same.

Being less crappier than another crappy station would still not get my appreciation. The best I ever do is listen to about half a song but it is always the same songs as a breeze by them on the dial. The only reason to listen to them is that afternoon hottie, Kate McCarthy. The last time I had that connection to a DJ was awhile back I was on the verge of stalking Jordan Graye. Silly me. Kate McCarthy is a real woman compared to that girl Jordan Graye.

Hi, Brain Dead Dumb A$$, here. I listen to the River and I'll gladly tell you why. It plays songs I like, grew up with, actually want to hear. Used to listen to Z93 when it was classic rock but well, it's not here anymore. I have no emotional connection to the River - it just happens to be the only station playing "classic" hits/rock right now. True oldies whatever is too old for me - not into 60's. If another station challenged the River with personalities I'd probably flip back and forth. As Atlanta radio stands right now, I flip from River to Fish to J to News/talk and back again. If another station challenged the River with personalities I'd probably flip back and forth. As Atlanta radio stands right now, I flip from River to Fish to J to News/talk and back again. A song comes on I don't like; I flip. Spots come on; I flip unless everyone is playing them at the same time. Glenn Beck talks about gas prices, Boortz talks about his plane, Ingraham gets too shrill, Hannity comes on; I flip.

I find myself flipping between Dave-FM, The River, The Fish, and WABE. I'll sometimes use the scan button to see if I stumble across anything good, but that hasn't happened yet.

I haven't listened much to the local oldies station. Personally, I am into some of the 60's music, just not the bubble-gum music they played on the AM stations back then. My exposure to 60's music was as a little kid, but even in grade school I preferred hearing album cuts on the new FM stations to the short versions of songs on AM. My objection to most stations that play oldies isn't that they play too much stuff from any particular decade. I tend to not listen to oldies stations because they only play the top-40 AM hits of the old days. I like hearing classic rock stations that play the music that was popular on FM in the late '60s and later.

I just wish there was a station that would play good songs without worrying about when the songs were first hits. Good music is good music, whenever it was recorded. Play good music, and people will listen.

I think that it is safe to say that no station in Atlanta has a 5,000 song library. The late Oldies Lake 102.3 claimed to have a 3,500 OLDIES library and called it the largest in the Southeast.

True Oldies seems to do a good job with managing burn (except for "Brandy" by Looking Glass). Decades formats tend to have a problem with burn, and TO solves this by going deep (but staying Top 40, not AOR deep album cuts--no Stairway), and spanning two and sometimes three decades (mostly 60s and pre-disco 70s Top 40, with some 50s).

Theoretically, they could go into the 80s (which would be as old as the 60s were in Fox's heyday), but it's generally acknowledged that boomers don't like 80s Top 40 too much (except for 80s AC stuff that doesn't belong there anyway, but could be added in the future), so they stop there.

Fox and Cool both were bad about burning Beatles/Beach Boys/Motown, and even WMAX was bad about burning 80s CHR. It's tough to program a decades format, and TO deserves kudos for doing it well.

The problem I have listening to almost any radio station is that when I hear a song I like, I'm happy and I stay tuned it. But when I hear a song that I don't like or that bores me, I hit the button for another station. So, even if it's one of my favorte songs, if I hear it for the third time in a week, chances are I hit the button. The trouble with every oldie station I've ever listened to, they always include the bubble gum with the good stuff.

Maybe I'm just one of those people that iPods and personal mix CD's were made for.

Yea, the River plays the same 2 Boston songs over and over and over and over and over.................and over again..................... Their 97 song playlist sure is fine, isn`t it. Give me a break......... the 5,000 song rotation at True Oldies-106.7 sounds alot better. No wonder there are big declines in revenue at The River 97.1 and Cox Radio. They are running that station into the ground with a very small playlist, much like they killed off Fox 97 after they bought it

A 5,000 song library is a lot different than a 5,000 song rotation. I do not believe they have 5,000 songs in rotation. Do you really think they have played all 5,000 songs since signing on? What is Scottie's definition of rotation? Played once a year? Also they do not just play them in any old order. They do have songs in regular rotation so it is not that random.

I see your point RTibbs. I do know that I haven`t heard many songs repeated on True Oldies 106.7. I am sure that their library contains 5,000 songs. But, I don`t doubt that the 5,000 songs are all played over time. I think what Scott may do is to put the 5,000 songs into the computer and mix them all up until the 5,000 songs are played that is my guess. It seems to be working. True Oldies is growing at a brisk rate. You must say that Atlanta has never had an Oldies station playing a deep list of Oldies songs like this. I heard "Lipstick on Your Collar" by Connie Francis last night on there. Scott Shannon does say all of the remarks about a 5,000 song playlist, so I think that it must be the case based on me listening to them. Poor old river........ You hear "More than a feeling" by Boston about 6 times a day on 97.1!!!!!!!!!!
