New 97.1 The River still new??? It sounds dead!

How do you know they are growing at a brisk rate? Did you get early access to the spring book? In a city of 4-5 million I wonder how many would eiter recognize or want to hear "Lipstick on your Collar" Looking at Yes.com I am guessing a little over 700 songs played in some type of rotation and other songs dropped in. Rock 100.5 is somewhere near 550 with not many one spins played. TruOldies expansive catalog but not necessarily means they are going to ever catch B98 or anything. They will probably never beat the River either unless Rock 100.5 can start chomp away at the River's younger demo but I just don;t see that happening to any great extent.

You will be surprised RTibbs!!!!!!!! "Lipstick on Your Collar" was one of the most requested Oldies on Sunny 100! Just ask John Allan. Hell, Connie Francis was the top hit maker in the 1960`s on the Rock and Roll Charts. I don`t know where yes.com got 700 songs, it is 5,000 songs. 700 could be the LOCAL library that WYAY True Oldies plays in the afternoons-it is growing by the way. Time will tell, but I think that True Oldies 106.7 will easily pass 97.1 The River at some point. I know they are frowing because all of the buisnesses that I go in and hear them on the radio. Simmer down RTibbs, they didn`t even have the Oldies format for much of the Spring book! I suggest that RTibbs plan a big cookout and blast True Oldies 106.7 in your yard! The party folks will Love U!!!!!

The oldies format was on WYAY for all of the spring book. WYAY has passed The River, but only with people who won't see their 50s again.

That's the trouble with programming based on decades. The music scene before the Beatles and the rest of the "English Invasion" in the 1963-64 was really more of a holdover of the 1950's. And, from a rock and roll perspective, the 50's didn't really start until 1956. When's the last time anyone heard an oldies station that played 50's music play anything from 1950 through 1955?

I predict that the station that gets the highest ratings will be the one that picks a good, big playlist that's based on how the songs sound, not on what year they were on the Billboard charts.

Agreed. That's one thing that True Oldies is doing right. They play 70s Top 40, and as much as I like disco (Bee Gees, etc.), new wave (Blondie, etc.), and AOR (pick one), none of those belong on that station, despite the fact that there's plenty of hits in each of those genres in the 70s.

I would love to hear more 50s doo-w0p, but that wouldn't sound right either, and would probably kill TSL among the boomer crowd.

Is anyone here keeping score on how many alleged radio people "bite" on the Kate McCarthy - Jordan Graye bait?

Should they be relegated to the Macon Boards for a few months as punishment? ;D

Please do not attack me in your postings. I am trying to keep the conversation to the radio and not personal. Yes.com keeps rolling 7 day total. I believe anything played more than twice in a week is ranked so at least 700 songs were played twice.

Also weren't the Beatles the number 1 hitmaker of the 1960's I show them leading Connie Francis 13 - 3?

think what Scott may do is to put the 5,000 songs into the computer and mix them all up until the 5,000 songs are played that is my guess.

Wow - what a great idea! Use a COM-PU-TER to mix up all the songs the radio station plays.

You should patent this idea. I'll bet there are other radio stations that may like the idea and want to do the same thing!

You'll make millions!!!

Almost like a station on shuffle.

It is too bad that they don't have any live personalities, as they have that monster signal which might be the biggest in the Southeast.

I heard it last week in Charleston, SC, with just a little bit of interference from our local 96.9. It is not good that they are dropping to a class C0 because they will lose some of their signal.

Hopefully they will get better ratings.

GreatTimes you are really falling behind your 12 posts per day average. I guess you are searching for info that shows Connie Francis was the no. 1 Rock n' Roll hitmaker of the 60's.

I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT! The building that replaced the original White Columns, they still call it "the New Building." IT WAS BUILT IN 1998. The NEW 97.1 the River is WHERE THE OLD FOX 97 USED TO BE!

Yeah Tibbs, what do you know about Oldies? I remember the mayhem created when Connie Francis appeared on Ed Sullivan. Or when she closed Woodstock. Or the time she got arrested in Miami for showing a partial boob. In fact, I really can't think of a more popular and influential hitmaker ever in the history of rock and roll than Connie Francis. I think RhubarbFan would agree too. Now if you will excuse me, Clark Kent and I are going to go down to Northside Tavern and demand a Connie Francis night.

Seriously, Connie Francis was extremely influential in the transition period of the late 50's to early 60's. She deserves a place in Rock & Roll history for starting the transition for female singers from the Jo Stafford/Patti Page style Big Band songstresses to the Chrissie Hynde/Patti Smith chick rockers who came later. She didn't have that many hits, but without her, follow-ups like the Ronettes or Leslie Gore wouldn't have had as good a reception as they got from programmers and A&R types. And that set the stage for acceptance of later chick singers like Grace Slick and Janis Joplin.

In absolute terms, her influence was minimal. But it wasn't zero. Without her pioneering efforts in opening up rock music for women, the entire course of progress of women in rock could have been set back several months.

I guess I was wrong Connie Francis was a bigger influence to music than The Beatles. She is obviously responsible for influencing some of the biggest stars of time. Think of all the great music we would have missed out on. The Beatles can;t make that kind of statement.

Now that's just being silly. She wasn't as influential as the Beatles, but she was more influential than Milly Small or Little Peggy March. Any time you hear a chick singer with a little emotional "catch" in her voice when she slides one lyric syllable over two notes, you're hearing the influence of Connie Francis. I'd go so far as to say that Mariah Carey's incredibly annoying tonsil gymnastics are a direct result of Mariah overdoing Connie's little vocal "catch".

I'd be shocked if Pariah Carey has ever even heard of Connie Francis.

Now be realistic. I'm sure that she never heard of Connie Francis. That would mean that she'd have to be paying attention to the universe around her. But, back when she was only a little diva in grade school, she must have heard "Where the Boys Are" or "Who's Sorry Now" on the background muzak in a grocery store or some other such venue. It wasn't something that would have made a conscious impression on her. But it did leave that subtle inspiration that leas to her stretching single notes into two notes, and then into three, and then into long operatic arias.

And, even if she never directly hear Ms. Francis, I'm sure she heard others who were inspired by her. Face it, all chick singers with an over-the-top vocal style, brunette hair, and large breasts are following in the footsteps of Connie Francis, even if they don't realize it.
