Preface Note: I thought this new AAR weekend show would be of interest to the news/talk forum - so I'm providing a link. And I should point out that I personally:
A.) Have no connection to AAR, the show or Bob Linden, and
B.) I eat tons of meat - I'm definitely not vegan.

"GO VEGAN with BOB LINDEN"

Most Air America programs view torture, violence, beheadings, and death as important current political issues. "GO VEGAN with BOB LINDEN" views them as the usual ingredients in most Americans' breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

"You are what you eat," says host Bob Linden, "so if you want violence out of your life, maybe you should start by getting it off your plate."

Other Air America programs rightly lament and bemoan war, violence, disease, world hunger, energy crises, environmental devastation - including global warming, deforestation, soil erosion, desertification, resource depletion, and so much more. "GO VEGAN with BOB LINDEN" offers the real solution for all of these - GO VEGAN and live the true lifestyle of the peace and social justice movement - cruelty-free and kind to the voiceless, voteless animals who are the world's most oppressed beings. Have a heart, and it may save your heart - while saving the planet.

So get ready to end global warming, deliciously - by eating your fruits and vegetables and all of earth's bounty. The planet's first vegan -animal rights program on a major network is here for you - GO VEGAN WITH BOB LINDEN

Vegans and Pre-Vegans Welcome!!!

It's not that new. "Go Vegan" has been on Air America for three months or so.

...and on the AAR affiliates in San Francisco and San Diego for years. Sometimes Linden's goofiness is appealing, at other times it's annoying...

Over Air America Radio Freethought Radio Goes National!

Wed Oct 3, 12:49 PM ET

To: RELIGION EDITORS

Contact: Dan Barker or Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-presidents, +1-608-256-8900, both of Freedom From Religion Foundation

MADISON, Wis., Oct. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "Hello all you godless infidels, out-of-the-closet atheists and happy heathens!"

That line will greet listeners Saturday to the nation's first-ever national broadcast of a Freethought Radio program, when the Freedom From Religion Foundation's weekly show "from the secular point of view" out of Madison, Wis., will broadcast over Air America Radio for the first time.

The first guest on Freethought Radio's national debut Sat., Oct. 6 will be Christopher Hitchens, author of the bestselling book, God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything.

The hour-long program, hosted by Foundation co-presidents Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor, has been airing on Air America's Madison affiliate since April 2006 and podcasting from ffrf.org/radio/.

"This is radio for the rest of us," says Dan, who bills himself on the show as "your friendly neighborhood atheist."

"Freethought Radio offers irreverent views, news, music and interviews," adds Annie Laurie. The show includes a regular segment known as "Theocracy Alert," interviews and music.

Freethought Radio will broadcast Saturdays over WWRL 1600 AM New York City, and over XM Satellite, Channel 167 from 7-8 p.m. Eastern.

The growing list of other affiliates where Freethought Radio can be heard on Saturdays (1-2 p.m. Eastern) includes: Ann Arbor, Austin, Charlottesville, Va., Chicago, Eugene/Springfield, Ore., Huntington/Ashland, W. Va./Ky., Ithaca, Palm Springs, St. Louis, Mo., Reno, Sheridan, Wy., Taos, and Victory Valley, Calif.

Freethought Radio will continue to broadcast from 11 a.m. - noon Central over Madison's Progressive Talk The Mic 92.1, produced by Brian Turany, the Mic program director.

"You can turn on the radio or TV 24/7 to be preached at. This is one hour a week of the public airwaves that offers an alternative," Annie Laurie said.

Freethought Radio has interviewed a distinguished roster of authors and activists, including Ron Reagan, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Natalie Angier, Katha Pollitt, Eleanor Smeal, and Betty Rollin. Previous programs may be listened to or downloaded for podcasting at: http://ffrf.org/radio/

I wonder what is up? Someone must be paying for these shows, but who would underwrite an atheist show? I guess it is more interesting than the religious crap on the other stations, but that stuff is lucrative (send me money or you're going to hell). I doubt most of AARs listeners are atheists anyway. Weekend filler. They would probably do better with a Pagan show. I guess this stuff is like the gardening shows the little stations play on the weekends.

Most of that weekend fare is underwritten and comes with its own sponsorship. There was a big drive a few months back to bring in sponsors and funding for "Go Vegan" in order to get it on AAR.

But it's low-profile weekend filler, right up there with "State of Belief' and other small weekend shows. KInda like the gardening shows on AM talk radio during the weekends.

"Freethought" is backed by the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Not sure where their funding comes from. Obviously it's not from passing the collection plate in Sunday services. Then again, I always wondered where groups such as Educational Media Foundation got all the money to slap up those annoying translators everywhere.
