New Addison County, Vermont Station?

Saw this posted on the VAB site.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR - VOX AM/FM is creating a new radio station to serve the Addison County area. We need a hands-on Program Director who “gets” small market and can do what it takes. If you like small-town living and can super serve a rural region we’d like to hear from you. You’ll do it all from the morning show to promotions to programming and remotes. The station will run lean and that means this job will require lots of hours! Sounds like a dream, huh? If you’re still with me and still interested then provide your resume, aircheck and production sample via mp3 to Ken Barlow

Anyone know what the story is? New station or are they flipping 92.1? Any idea on the format?

Very intersting. Across the lake in Essex County New York WIPS A M went silent in March 2008. Not a very powerful signal I wonder if the two link ?

I'm with Will - it's gotta be 92.1. I'll be very interested to see what they try next on that signal.

CHR is really tough to do in a small market with almost all of your revenue coming from local clients unless you're a station with tons o' heritage. I've found that Mr/Mrs. small business owner tends to buy formats they like, and what they think of as rap ain't one of them. Perception is reality. I've had more than a few clients tell me they don't want teens hanging around their store anyway. Also noticed that some small markets are more conservative regarding song lyrics and such.

How about CHR?

Good analysis, though. You summed up ignorant sheltered Vermonters perfectly.

I don't see how this translates into ignorance. Unlike large markets where ad buys are strictly "by the numbers", in a small market a station-client relationship is a must. CHR is a tough sell these days...long gone are the days where it's a format with something for everyone.

As far as "sheltered", that's kind of a disparaging way to describe the type of person that prefers a rural lifestyle. You make it sound like leaving the hassles of city living is a bad thing. Wish I had a way to make a living out in the boonies, I'd move there too (well, Vermont is a bit "lefty" for me, but out in the sticks to be sure).

There's a difference between preferring a rural lifestyle while having knowledge of urban areas, and having lived in a rural area all your life with no knowledge of what goes on in big cites. Many Vermonters strike me as the latter. Vermont is full of people who dismiss the music on 95 Triple X and have probably not talked to a black person for more than 30 seconds in their entire lifetime.

I've lived in Boston for 5 years, and some of my best friends who've lived in VT there entire lives won't drive down here to visit me, like they're afraid of the place. I grew up in Burlington, so it's okay for me to say these things.

I would have to agree with Will. I grew up in rural Washington County,NY and summered in Orwell ,VT. There really was not much difference in beliefs in a 60 mile radius.
I also moved to a large city ( Boston) for employement reasons and it actually was an education in itself.I have noticed the rural areas even if they don't admit to it follow trends and being in the area this summer everyone I associated with was listening to WOKO which I believe was an old Albany,NY station now around Burlington?
A few years back the same folks in Orwell listened to WVMT-AM ,WRUT FM and WIPS AM/FM. Easy listening WEZF I never heard on but it suvived for years and was a very powerful station.
Washington County,NY was WGFM (automated ) ,WGY-AM ,WWSC-FM , & WTRY-AM .the country market was WGNA-FM & WPTR-AM.
But all these stations had plenty of sponsors even for various markets and tastes they served.
Interestng!

Having lived in that area for the better part of a year, i'd say they Hot AC would fly. Well, unless Vox decides that WEZF needs a MAJOR makeover. Hot AC is a fairly safe format that won't scare off listeners and still allows the music and jocks to be fun. Hell, had a certain company embraced (and not pushed away) Addison County residents, their Hot/Modern AC would have rock and rolled in that area.

That's an interesting idea if it's indeed true. Look at the success WIRY has in Clinton County. Give Addison County a station with news, birthdays, and six safe records an hour. Can't be any less compelling than oldies off the bird.

Hot AC flew when Star did it in 2000. Alice? Never had a chance. Star can fill the niche of the station that doesn't make the older people who populate the market feel old.

Monster Mash Origins

Well Will,

I had remembered that the Monster Mash was not originally a Halloween tune. If I recall correctly, Dr. Demento aired this considerably earlier than the holiday it is most associated with. Which would stand to reason if it was spinning far enough prior to Halloween to coincide with what Wikipedia's entry suggests.

Wikipedia has this to say:

On October 20, 1962, eight weeks after it was recorded, "Monster Mash" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart just in time for Halloween. It has been a perennial holiday favorite ever since.

Now, why on earth anyone would play it outside of Halloween nowadays doesn't seem to make any sense, unless they were shooting for an original release date. Eight weeks prior to October 20th, would put it at the end of August.

Unless it was a weak attempt at stunting... ???

Hi NHRC:

Sometimes people do stuff because they are like..."Why not"? and the fact is the song was "a graveyard smash".
