There's not a lot of religious radio airchecks, but then there's not a lot of stations like WGIB. They are, shall we say, different. Not in that they're old-fashioned and KJV-Only, but in that they have a deep fried country soul that gospel hucksters like K-Love and AFR wouldn't recognize if it dunked them in the baptistry.

This is 37 minutes of their Sunday night after church broadcast, largely call-ins from mostly elderly shut-ins who chitchat, warble hymns off key, or read homemade poetry. It doesn't get any more real than this.

Re: Anyone Remember Powerline?

With nothing to do on a Sunday morning in the early seventies, I used to listen to Powerline hosted by deejay John Borders from Dallas. He played songs that I did not hear on the NY stations. He had a very low key gospel message.

I sent away for a list of stations and they sent me a nice Powerline poster. Eleven years ago I became a Believer. A few years ago as I was looking through things and I found the poster which was never hung. I did hang it up and it is on my bedroom wall. I am probably the only person in the world who still has a Powerline poster on his wall.

Anyone else listen to Powerline? Or were you busy watching Davie and Golliath?

Absolutely (to both), Davy and Goliath were on in the morning, Powerline was on Sunday night, I think on 99X NYC. Somewhere, I believe I have a mono-recording of a Powerline show. I used to love that show. Brother John sounded like a nice guy, his talks were more youthful, and the music was great (I also loved the "You're on the Powerline" jingle). If you'd like me to find and post one of these days, I'll be glad to. (btw, Steven, I'm sorry for the delay on your 8-track. I promise soon!).

Re: Anyone Remember Powerline?

No problem with the 8-Track. It would be nice to hear and record a Powerline show. It has been since about 1972 since I heard it. It could have been 99x (WXLO back then) or maybe WPIX-FM.

It would be from a differenct perspective now that I believe in Christ.

Re: Anyone Remember Powerline?

I still have a copy of a show from April, 1976 on cassette, recorded when I was living in Albany, NY. The show was produced by the Southern Baptist Convention. John Borders (who in 1974 became the longtime "voice" of the automated TM Stereo Rock format) may indeed have been one of the earlier voices, but by 1976, "Brother John" was Jon Rivers, former top 40 jock who is now the morning host on the K-Love radio network. He is also the host of the syndicated "20: The Countdown Magazine", a weekly Christian countdown show.

The show I have played "I Got to Know" by Starbuck (their follow up to "Moonlight Feels Right") and "Don't Think, Feel" by Neil Diamond.

The jingle package was indeed great and was used several times throughout the show.

Re: Walt "Baby" Love

Walt "Baby" Love does a syndicated show of gospel/rock type music. It is played Sunday morning on Jammin' 105.9 here in Austin. Jammin' is now streamed.

His show sounds more Pentecostal than Baptist sponsored Powerline. I also heard him give a good gospel message in one segment between songs.
