New AM 1440 in Jackson

Hey all -

Does any one out there know what has become of the new AM 1440 permit in Jackson? It looks like it will expire soon....

--- Casual Observer

Tell me more. Didn't find it in Radio-Locator. Day/Night power, number of towers, etc. This facility is of course possible only because 1450 WJXN went silent. I can't imagine anyone investing in a new Jackson AM in this day and age.

The licensee is "Rivers LP", the power is 5 kW days, 300 watts night. 2 towers day, 5 at night. The tower site appears to be in the 290-block of Beasley Road, near where it meets State Street (US-51). There is no existing towers shown on Google Maps or Street View, although those pictures are a few years old now.

The name Wirt Yerger is mentioned as a partner in Rivers LP; he is part owner of TalkQ station WPBQ Flowood according to the filing.

Here's the engineering exhibit if anyone's interested.

I'd be shocked if that facility is being built. We just got a CP for a new station in Birmingham, for a 6 tower day and night array that won't even cover half the city. It's there, but I would bet my next paycheck it'll never be built as-is.

I can't believe someone would put good money into this project... a new AM, DA-2, five towers, 300 watts night .... where do I begin? Thinking of building it, and selling it for a quick profit? Doubt that too. If I had to get some kind of AM, I'd consider putting 1450 back on, and that's only the lesser of two evils compared to this 1440 boondoggle.

Given that I drive by this intersection daily, I can tell you that the only tower site I see is at the Jack FM/Rock 93.9 studios just a bit further up the street and the one at the Sound & Communication building. Plus, where would they able to put it? At that intersection, there's Insurance Auto Auctions, a steel building across Beasley, a mini-storage facility and an Entergy substation on the east side of State.

Heading east from the storage buildings, I see a little building just down the road a bit. Looks like maybe a small auto repair shop or something. There's a huge field behind it, that's where the towers would go.

“Oh, joy!:D

They have a few AMs scattered through the south, including 1540 in Greenwood. Their FCC filing only shows one left in Alabama in Centre, but at one time they had 1050 in Alex City, 1240 in Jasper and 1540 in Sumiton. The stations all seemed to spend more time off the air than on. The Sumiton station is still off, today, and I don't know if WKXG in Greenwood is back on or not.

They also have an FM CP in Sylvania, Alabama (the Henagar/Valley/Mentone part of extreme NE AL).

Ed Smith is "all hat, no cattle"... 1540 Sumiton, AL was to be sold, but the deal never closed. 1170 Hanceville is yet another Smith debacle.

Are we gonna have another Bishop Willis (God rest his soul) situation on our hands here before too long? If what it's being said about the owner's Alabama situation is true, methinks it could.

This won't be a Bishop Willis situation. The good Bishop took existing stations and ran them into the ground - 1440 AM hasn't been built yet. Ed Smith also has to get the FCC to agree to an extension of the CP. It would be impossible to build the facility with the current CP expiration date.
