New AM Radio Station Coming to 1400 AM

According to the FCC a grant was issued for a new AM Radio Station in Middletown, New York on 1400 AM...Does anyone have any info. on this station, format, when their going on the air, etc. ?

From what I understand, ths has been in the works for some time and is being puit together by a locally prominent engineer. Good luck to him.

Anyone know what his output will be??? Format?? I'm from the old school; AM radio is not dead...good luck ;D

Actually I was wondering how they could start a new station on a very busy AM dial...I'm guessing they will be at very low power...hope they will be streaming....Anyone know what the call letters will be ?

They will be 1kw non-directional day and night. The only format that seems to work on small market AM stations, which have a limited range, around here, is standards. The rest don't even show up in the ratings .I hate throwing cold water on this but I don't understand someone starting a new AM station since most of them just keep the transmitter warm by hooking it to a satellite 24/7.I wish him good luck.

Has there been any call letters issued yet ? When are they suppose to be going on the air ?

I have no idea when they will be on the air . It looks like this has been in the works for 2 years already.CHARLES WILLIAMSON was just granted a construction permit by the FCC , and has not yet applied for call letters.I got the information off the FCC public files website http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/amq?stat...&slat2=&NS=N&dlon2=&mlon2=&slon2=&EW=W&size=9. The station owners may have to go through local building approvals, especially for the tower .People don’t like them in 'their back yard'. Other than that they can start building whenever they want but before construction permit expires .It proably will take some time before they are up and running.

<<Oh ok...thanks for the info...I checked that link it appears they will only be a daytime station unless they change their application later.

If you scroll down you will see a second file for nighttime operation .This is necessary for AM stations because they usually have to reduce their power or alter their pattern in order to prevent interference to other stations on the same frequency. In reality this has a limited success ;except in or near a local AM stations city of license they are unlistenable at night because of all the chatter .When built the new station won't have to do this , they will only have some different constraints . I am not sure what that means because their pattern -non directional is the same. . Still I would expect a range of no more than 15 miles at night, if that much.

Any idea how they selected 1400? Seems a little too close to WEOK (1390) and the WAMC relay on 1400 in Albany. I think this might fit better on the expanded band which doesn't have as many signals in the Northeast.

In order to get a Construction permit any potential station owner must do an extensive engineering study to prove to the FCC that they will not cause any interference with existing stations. Then they apply for the frequency allocation .Those existing stations can file a petition to deny if they feel they will be interfered with.
The original idea of the expanded AM band was to have some existing stations migrate to it from the frequency they were using .By shutting down the old frequency it was hoped that interference between stations would be reduced. However the FCC has not accepted any applications for use of the expanded band since 2002. At first I was surprised that the FCC would allow a first adjacent frequency to 1390 WEOK to be used , however the new station won't be a problem for WEOK .The Poughkeepsie based station's 5kw signal is directional, with somewhat of an east -west null daytime, and a near total one at night. The new station has the same 1kw power and non -directional pattern as WALL 1340 Middletown. Their signal is very weak in the Poughkeepsie area .So while they certainly won't come in anywhere near Poughkeepsie they will be ok in the Middletown area. WAMC 1400 Albany won't be an issue at all.

I see...I'm wondering even thought the pattens are different might the two frequencies in the same town be a problem at 1340 & 1400 ?

No they are 60khz apart the same as WEOK 1390 and WKIP 1450 in Poughkeepsie . Their towers are only a few miles apart and they cause no problem to each other ,except if you are located right near one of the stations towers and have a really cheap radio.

I myself wonder if a Local Talk format will be attempted ? I don't believe any Local Talk format has been sucessfull in the lower Hudson Valley 24/7 so far. There's been many satellite talk but I don't believe any local talk statons though I could be wrong.

If there is another AM station, the format should be "Real Oldies" as in "from doo-wop to disco"
