New AM state! 3/7/14 (early 3/08)

Got a new log last night plus a new state with this one!

1590 - KVGB Great Bend, KS; Coast to Coast AM fading in and out with KLFE and KLIV-CA; fair at 0030 PT with ID "News/Talk 1590 KVGB" over KLFE. NEW #591, 5KW, 1,243 miles! This is a NEW state for me as well. It's pretty odd because I have KS on FM before AM! (KZRD 93.9, KSKL 94.5 back in Bothell WA-no chance now due to KATS, and KFNF 101.1)

I also had...
690 XEWW Tijuana BCN huge at 0005 with Mexican NA, dominating all directions
730 CKDM Dauphin MB big between 0000 and 0030 with loads of country/soft rock mx
780 WBBM Chicago IL (for the 100th time...) at 0010 with news over KKOH
900 UNID Coast to Coast under CKBI (maybe rare CHML Hamilton ON?) ESPN SE probably 72W KKRT-WA
950 XEKAM Rosarito BCN SS under KJR
1180 1khz tone under KOFI and Rebelde - weird? Had a big het on 1179 - is Cuba off by a khz or did I have an EU het? Checked other EU freqs like 1215, 1413, 855 and nothing heard. Odd.
1190 CFSL Weyburn SK fighting with KEX - KEX's offset is off by several hz and so it creates a weird CCI effect.
1240 KBLL Helena MT the lone GY ID, at 0006. Any other GYs were so full of stations IDs were impossible.
1280 likely CJSL Estevan SK (Ultra-rare) with country mx "Pontoon" Little Big Town around 0015 in phase of local KIT Yakima
1330 Coast to Coast (KNSS?) weak under CJYM
1570 XERF, KCVR and UNID REL in and out, likely my needed KBCV, but still can't get an ID (@%&$!)
1600 KTUB Centerville UT very strong

2nd new log of 3/8 about an hour ago...
1390 - KLGN Logan, UT; 103.3 mention at 1704 PT; "Stand By Me" Ben E. King and an elevator song which may have been Ray Conniff; another ID "We're the station you can relax to. 103.3 Lite FM" and into another adult standards song at 1710 PT. NEW #592, 5KW, 536 miles; KBBO nulled out. UT #24 now.

Nicely done, crainbebo!

Given your success with WBBM, you might want to take a stab at WGN. WGN seems to be getting out better lately than they had been for quite some time. Perhaps turning off their IBOC has had something to do with it. At any rate, as you may already know, the two transmitters are almost within walking distance of each other. About a mile apart. When I'm traveling, I've been finding that when one is present, so is the other. That hadn't always been the case until recently. I'm guessing (but stand to be corrected) that if you can pull WBBM out from under KKOH, you should have a shot at getting WGN over KDWN.

WBBM seems to come in more than WGN. However, WGN does get out, a little less often than 780. On some more "southern nights", I always believe that the talker on 720 that sounds ENE-WSW is just a weak 184W KFIR Sweet Home OR, which I have logged in the past. On eastern nights, WGN does make it, yes. WSCR is way tougher with KBOI and a directional pattern, WLS has been one-time-only (September 2010 in Bothell WA) and WMVP is no-go due to KOMO and pattern. I did log WYLL one spectacular night with Christian talk, I wonder if the pattern was out of whack because phasing KSL pulled it in, weak to fair.

WSCR is sort of a strange one. Best signal in town by day (although WGN and WBBM aren't far behind), but at night for some reason they don't do as well as the other Chicago non directional blowtorches. Of course a strong R. Rebelde from Cuba is part of that, but they also seem sub-par to me going west or north. WMVP obviously is a no-go where you are (as is KOMO here). I seem to recall that they were having some transmitter issues and running 30kw or something like that not long ago. Don't know if that is or was actually the case. WYLL, since Salem took over, does get out well day and night...unless you're in a null. I'm wondering if they were on day pattern when you caught them. Either that....or as you suggest...they were leaking from their supposedly very tight pattern. OR, here again, I seem to remember they were having some issues a while back and running fulltime off their day transmitter for a while, or perhaps it was a non-directional STA from either their day or night site.

Maybe Radioman or one of the other Chicago area guys can shed some light on some of this.

Regarding WYLL, they really get out to the north now at night as I have heard them up in Northern Wisconsin at night better than the other 50KW Chicago stations. That was never possible under the old ownerships when they nulled to the north & northwest at night. I'm not aware of a particular instance when they ran day pattern at night, but as we know that is always possible.
I've never heard KOMO in the Chicago area for obvious reasons, but I did pick them up on the Northern Ireland Global Tuners receiver last year. Some signal was going over the pole apparently.

Do you know Neil Kazaross? He lives in Barrington, IL not too far from you guys. He has an antenna called a KAZ and it nulls common stuff real well. He picks up KOMO 1000 on occasion at sunset with WMVP less than 20 miles from him, KLFE 1590, KNTS 1680, and KCLK 1430 (!) in Asotin WA are also common WAs for him, all with the Kaz antenna. Maybe you should get in touch with him and see if you guys can actually pull in KOMO in Chicago!

Interesting. I'm 15 miles northwest of Barrington. (3 of my 4 kids were born there). WMVP's day signal is stronger in Barrington than here and the night signal is much stronger. Comparable to WBBM, WGN, and WSCR. If the antenna can pull KOMO out from under WMVP, I'd think it could find all manner of stuff under the other three.

I've heard XEOY when WCFL/WMVP has been off....and every now and then even when its on! The night signal really drops off as soon as you start getting west of the transmitter site.
