New AM Station in Petal

I looked in

www.radio-locator.com

and they don't seem to know anything about it.

Later I will look through the FCC records for the applications made during the "window" 4 years ago. Some of those are still out there just composting away.

Wanted to revive this post. Is the new AM station on the air in Petal?

Has anyone heard? If so, what is their format?

I checked the CDBS - there is a construction permit issued for a new AM in Petal, MS at 1520 khz, 50kw-daytime, 20kw-critical hours, 700w-night. The daytime pattern uses 2 towers - the critical and night pattern uses 6 towers.

The CP expires in 2010, so I'm guessing that it will be a while before you see it on the air. Building a 50kw AM site with a 6 tower directional array will take some time and $$$.

... and one wonders if the $$ will be worth it.

Ground conductivity down there is really pretty bad, and it doesn't help that they are so high on the band. Looking at the coverage map, their daytime coverage ain't that great -- especially for 50 kW.

Nights? Yikes. Barely covers Petal. Don't expect to hear much west of Downtown Hattiesburg. Pattern is very tight, pointing a little east of due south. You may be able to hear it, though, on the western tip of Cuba. ¡Hola Pinar del Río!

Oh, and come to think of it -- WLAC's night IBOC will really be noticeable. Ouch.
