New AM stations

if the FCC grants permits for new AM stations soon----
willl those stations likely be eligible for FM translators ?

it appears the current FCC proposal says some existing AM stations may be able to apply for
fm translators. That seems to indicate new AM stations in the future may not be able to add
fm translators.

Any AM station may operate a translator, as long as the translator coverage area meets the criteria of the rules (translator 60 dbu w/in 2mv and withing 25 miles of AM tower). Problem, of course, is finding a translator. The AM rules change proposal would open a special window for new translators--one per station.

There are no plans to open a window for new AM stations, or for new translators beyond this special window.

the FCC plans to alllow a number of new AM station in May 2014 I think.

wonder if they willl be eligible for higher power at night & fm translators under new FCC rules.,

If you live in a small rural community where no frequencies are available to build a new FM station, you might be brave enough to think an AM station would gather some audience, and might actually generate some sales.

For a metro area that already has four or more stations of some kine, IO'm with you... Why would anyone want a new AM station these days?

could some people think----------they willll put a new AM station on the air in order to add an fm translator &
have an AM---FM combo. ? only someone without $$$$ concerns would do that.

I know of someone who is sitting on a whole slew of "almost silent" AM's, just to sell them for that purpose.

I think it was Birach that acquired a 640 in the Terre Haute market. Birach wants to take a 640 in Michigan silent, just to move the Terre Haute station, into the Chicago market, down in Peotone, IL, which is barely in the Chicago market. Peotone is practically on the edge of Kankakee County, but on the Will County side. So depending on the coverage, if the station gets moved into the Peotone area, it would likely serve Kankakee County more than Peotone, or even Beecher.
