New Anchor for GMAZ Starts 9/12

Watching now, so Colton did take the 'Javier' spot. Wondering will he also continue with Noon News or they continue with the roulette wheel of hosts?

I read the article. His name absolutely does not ring a bell, no matter which station he worked for.
Oh, OK...I thought maybe you didn't, so I posted the photos that aren't pay. I don't know anything about him, but he seems well-spoken & excited, and he sure has cool parents. šŸ˜

I remember Derek Staahl. Nice enough guy. I didn't watch a lot of his anchoring time. His Facebook post (below) says he's teaming up with Yetta Gibson at 4 & 8PM starting in October.

*LIFE NEWS* After three unforgettable years in San Diego, I’m moving to Phoenix and rejoining Arizona’s Family! I’ll be anchoring the 4 pm and 8 pm newscasts M-F with the amazing Yetta Gibson and producing impactful stories for this powerhouse duopoly. The local newspaper AZ Central published a story today about my return (which is a flattering and strange thing to say) and I told them getting this opportunity to come back was a ā€œjump-up-and-down-excitement kind of moment.ā€ Try not to think too much about whether I should have added a ā€œwithā€ before ā€œexcitement,ā€ because I haven’t been thinking about that AT ALL…. At the same time, I will certainly miss my friends and colleagues in San Diego. ABC 10News will always hold a special place in my memory. We navigated a pandemic together and launched a new kind of storytelling (In-Depth) that continues to grow. Thank you. And the tacos. I will miss the tacos. To the folks in Arizona, I’ll see you on TV the first week of October!

I, too, remember Derek. He was a decent reporter, occasionally subbing on weekend GMAZ. IIRC, he did okay on anchoring but needed more practice. Perhaps he got the practice over in San Diego.

I gues he's "kinda" replacing Brandon Lee at 4pm and 8pm. It sounds like Nicole will not be co-anchoring at 4pm. Perhaps she will move to the 6pm hour permanently.

Question: do we think that the addition of Derek Stahl will lead to more normal anchor parings on 3TV. I get a bit tired of their endless rotating anchor pairings. Can we get some stable assignments on 3TV? On every other station, there are assigned anchors to the newscasts.

I was wondering the same thing Former. An example is a still/picture promo hyping 3TVs new afternoon lineup, the 4PM anchors were Yetta and Nicole. Was Derek a just-decided addition?

Stahl is an exceptional journalist, but again, he's another one who's been with 3TV multiple times over the years. This will be his third go-round with them.

That said, hopefully 3/5 won't make the same mistake they made with Brandon Lee's "return" with those embarrassing promos. Long and short of it, Lee walked away again less than a year later some may recall.

The potential difference between Lee and Stahl is that Lee took time off for a book tour and, if you follow his FB, really wanted to leave tv. But Lee apparently couldn't support himself with just the book revenue. OTOH, Stahl is coming from a SD television station where he was the "breaking news" anchor. So, hopefully, Stahl is a bit more committed to a tv news career. But who knows for sure?

And hopefully, the ridiculous promos will not return!!

I could see anchor pairings like this:

12noon -- Nicole
4pm -- Derek and Yetta
5pm -- Nicole and Jared
6pm -- Nicole and Jared
6:30pm -- Jaime
8pm -- Derek and Yettta
9pm -- Jaime and Jared
10pm -- Yetta and Jared.

Jaime could still do her local loves segments for GMAZ in the afternoons.

While I am not in any business meetings or talk with any of the parties involved, I thought it was 'interesting' when Lee came back. He seemed to be committed to not doing TV news. And then to depart. And why did AZ Family management take a second chance on an anchor who left one time already? I could speculate all day.

I have watched a couple of Lee and Carey Pena's Facebook show Good Morning Sunshine. The subjects I saw were okay.
