New Arbitron Hudson Valley Ratings Debut

The first book has been issued for the new Hudson Valley market. Consisting of Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Orange Counties, and rated #39, it replaces the old Newburgh-Beacon market. With the exception of WHUD, rated #1, the leading stations are primarily from NYC. Perhaps many of the ones that are more local to the market, such as WFAS and WXPK are hampered by signals that do not cover the entire area.

Did this move leave the Poughkeepsie market intact?

If not, I'd hate to be K104.

Yes it does.

If you're also WRRV you're not happy at 1.0 or WJGK (formerly WGNY) at 0.5. Ouch.

I hate to say this folks...But Hudson Valley is imbalance and inaccurate.

Bring back Newburgh, Poughkeepsie and Westchester Markets please.

They are the only ones with accuracy

BJ, you're wrong. The Hudson Valley should include Dutchess (and perhaps Ulster and Sullivan) but this is the closest thing to an accurate representation of the region as there is. It's much better then separate ratings for Westchester, Orange and Dutchess. Any research that shows KISS and K104 or FAS and HUD on the same playing field is flawed. The Hudson Valley is just like Long Island and the suburban Jersey markets. Not perfect, but much better than it was.

That's not correct anymore. Sure the smaller stations get screwed, but in a sense, they should. This book shows that those stations don't really have the reach needed to impact the lower hudson valley / suburban NY market, and that, these days is what the agencies want to see. Steve is right, showing them on the same level is flawed. I do certainly disagree with his premise that U S D should be in too. That's too big and is not reflective of the area on any level. Newburgh-Beacon bridge has always been sort of the natural dividing line, this just reaffirms it.

And WQBU (also on 92.7) got a 0.9....WQBU can be heard very well in Rockland and Southern Westchester....WRRV does not get a listenable signal until the NYS Thruway turns north into Orange County.

I said when the new Hudson Valley book was announced it would be unfair to group the small market stations of Orange and Sullivan Counties in with the bigger Westchester - Putnam County area stations. Why not give Westchester County their own book? Would they not be bigger than say Duchess? You don’t need this survey to know that is where the money and population is. However now that it is done I looked back at the past few Newburg-Middletown Arbitron books, although a few local stations that were lower in the rankings lost out, the same mostly NYC stations dominate the ratings as before.
