NEW ARBITRON MARKET CHANGES PROPOSED FOR ARIZONA

just heard SUNNY 100 say they cover "flagstaff, prescott, and the verde valley"

same is true of other FM's and at least one AM (KAZM)

makes NO SENSE to have Flag combined with Sedona, Cottonwood, Clarkedale, Jerome, Prescott, Camp Verde, etc.

why?

FM stations can't cover the entire areas of coconino and yavapai counties, unless they have translators like KNAU and KVNA-FM (sunny 100) have

coconino co. is the 2nd largest county in the USA

AM stations are licensed for 10kW (KYET) or less, and not one is powerful to cover everywhere at 5mV/m (or 7.5mV/m in the wifi age) - KYET, AM 930, and KVNA are class D so they only cover their city of license at night, no way they can get down to the verde
Just like PHX, there is not one 50kW station in either yavapai or coconino co. although 1180 might be able to go up to 50kW except during critical hrs (i'd have to check)

so what happens?

*the stations with multiple translators like KNAU get the highest ratings - this is deceptive!

*stations like KVNA-AM 600 flagstaff who is at STA off low power from the flag school admin bldg are at a disadvantage - again, deceptive! Not fair to Yavapai Inc. and KVNA !

*ed schultz might be beating KNAU afternoons (I have no idea) in the Flag city limits but nobody would ever know!

*Flag's LPAM FOX SPORTS 1650 that has great production for a LPAM station is also at a disadvantage!

*new markets could be:

FLAGSTAFF/WILLIAMS (and the rest of Coconino Co., 130,000 persons 0+ road atlas)

SEDONA/COTTONWOOD/PRESCOTT (and the rest of Yavapai Co., 185,000 persons 0+ rand mcnally road atlas)

plain and simple

translator stations won't have an unfair advantage

and...

class D AM's and STA AM's won't be at a disadvantage

KAFF and KVNA are class D, but KYET's regular class is Class B (10 kW, ND days, 250 watts, ND nights).
The Phoenix area has three stations running 50 kW-KFNX 1100's power is 50 kW days, 1 kW nights, with the same directional pattern 24 hours a day, KPXQ 1360's power is 50 kW, ND days, 1 kW, directional nights, and KMIK 1580's power is 50 kW 24 hours a day, directional at night.
There are no applications on file from KYET.

Arbitron is smoking some funny smelling stuff there.

they sure are, can't they read a map and see that Prescott is 100 miles from Flag, and Flag 30 miles from both Sedona and Williams ?

I believe that the station groups created the metro... there are quite a few metros where few if any statins cover all the area. For example, not one FM in San Francisco covers the whole metro.

I thought KMEL did a pretty good job of it.

Not even close. Of 6.8 million in the metro, KMEL covers 5.2 million with a usable signal. The best FM, KIOI, covers 5.5 million. In other words, no FM coversbetter than about 75% of the population, and most far less.

KGO and KNBR, to name two AMs, cover even beyond the limits of the market.

When I grew up in Sonoma and Santa Rosa, you could pick KMEL up crystal clear. I'd say thats a pretty good shot?
