New Auction Is Up

With an opening bid of $15,000, you could be the lucky seat winner of a class C2 FM serving the Flying J truckstop in Ehrenberg and thousands of rattlesnakes in the distance...

$25,000 is the opening bid for a class A in Desert Hills, which would be north of Lake Havasu. That's a little rich for rimshotting Havasu with a class A.

$20,000 is the opening bid for a C1 license in Overgaard.

$2,500 for a C1 in Tusayan. I don't know if that's commercially viable, either. Maybe useful for one of the tribes up there, though.

$25,000 for a C2 in Snowflake.

Time for those Media Hut grads to spread their wings, Doc.
 
Ehrenberg it is, as the Nurse and I stop there often to avoid the higher gas prices in neighboring Blythe. Plus it's got a Wendy's, and we'll be closer to the Old Gringo's double wide Hut at the Rancho Mirage Mobile Home Park.
 
You get 93.5 with 50,000 watts ERP at 500 feet. Your competition is KJMB at 100.3 with 36,000 watts at 160 feet to the west and KBUX at 96.5 with 3,000 watts at 66 feet to the west. Both stations have stories: KJMB is a one-person operation that has had financial trouble & KBUX emanates from a telephone pole behind the house of the original owners. Before the cellular streaming days, stations like those along an interstate could not only sell the local audience, but folks traveling through looking for a place to eat or sleep. While this has potential to be the best signal in the Blythe-Quartzsite market, I don't know how it turns a profit. The antenna could probably hang on one of the existing sticks on those cliffs before I-10 descends to the river. But you'd need a site survey and construction costs. Then comes the question of how much revenue the other two stations have locked up. I doubt there's much to go around. I wish the succesful bidder well.
 
I talked to the original owners of KBUX. They only billed $15,000 to $18,000 a year. Most years they had no advertising in the months the winter visitors were gone. In other words, much of the year they were commercial free. Marvin seemed to be more aggressive in sales, seeking advertising beyond Quartzsite. For certain, the cash cow is not mooing.
 
I think that cash cow took a wrong turn and wandered into the Ehrenberg Wendys. Probably ended up on the menu!
