New AZ Family Weekend Evening Forecaster: Lauren Rainson

Meteorologist Lauren Rainson debuted on June 27th. Bio is up on AZFamily.com. So Kim Powell can go back to reporting. It was mentioned Lauren isn't replacing anyone. That makes 7 Forecasters. They have a lot of news time to cover. Still a traffic jam on weekday evenings with Royal Norman, Sean McLaughlin, and Paul Horton.

And, here we are on Monday 7/5 and Tuesday 7/6 with Lauren doing weather on some of the evening newscasts...as if they don't have enough staff.

It'll be interesting to see what Gray does when they take over. Do they generally run lean and mean, or will bloated news staffs like KTVK/KPHO be allowed to continue?

If typical Corporate America prevails, it will be cost cutting for increasing the bottom line.
No sense in endorsing the news staff... producing the premier news channel in Arizona. Thus, if it ain't broke; don't fix it. Just sayin'

But I wonder how the ratings are doing, particularly in the evening timeslots for KTVK/KPHO. In another thread here, someone implied that some of the evening newscasts are very low-rated (I think they said "hashtags" for ratings). Do they really need SEVEN meteorologists (2 weekday am, 3 weekday pm, 2 weekend) on an Arizona station???

And tonight (7/16), Kim Powell is doing weather since (allegedly) all of the other prime time weather-guessers took the night off. Burning off vacation time, perhaps?

And, Saturday am 7/17, Kylee Cruz did the weather...this is ridiculous! Is everyone on vacation???
And on Sunday am 7/18, Kylee Cruz is again doing the weather. Kim Quintero has her birthday weekend off. Plus she was doing some news shots during the week. Ian Schwartz was off the last couple of days.
I'm still a little surprised Royal Norman, Paul Horton, or Sean McLaughlin did not come in.

While I understand the need for vacations, I am a bit perplexed that -- during the monsoons -- the AZ Family weather team is off doing whatever. I certainly don't mind Kylee and Kim doing the weather during most of the year when absolutely nothing is happening in AZ. It would be nice though to have real mets around when there is monsoon weather...

Friday night was an active monsoon night too. Kim very openly admits that she's not a meteorologist, and Brandon and Yetta like to give her a hard time when she has to fill in and there's actual real weather happening (asking her about cumulonimbus clouds, etc). I can't believe everyone gets to take time off at the same time! The scheduling is indeed a bit strange at Arizona's Family.

I take it you're referring to Kim Powell, not Kim Quintero. Kim Q is a meteorologist.

But Kim Powell has done a very good job as a fill-in weather-guesser despite her admitted lack of education in the subject. She's far better than Monica Garcia, who is a very good reporter, but her skills at weather apparently came from the Dewey Hopper School of Meteorology -- lame attempts at comedy taking precedence over real forecasting.

"I take it you're referring to Kim Powell, not Kim Quintero. Kim Q is a meteorologist...."

Yes, indeed. IIRC, Kim Powell, a very effective AZ Family journalist in Idaho, chasing after the nut case woman that snuffed out her kids up there. Powell asked great questions of the Idaho locals while on assignment. She is a news hawk.
She seemed to be offered temp-weather, following Ashlee DiMartino's unscheduled departure.
I liked Ashlee.

Fair critique Keith. I agree, Powell has done a very good job reporting the weather under the station's current circumstances. She seems to have tremendous work ethic.

Back on topic, I think Rainson is an excellent addition to the 3TV weather team. Welcome Lauren! 👍🏾

Correct - Kim Powell who was filling in on weather Friday night. She's a great reporter and did a solid job on weather given the monsoon activity. I appreciate that she owns up to her lack of meteorological knowledge and makes light of it instead of trying to fake it. I just can't believe with 7 meteorologists on staff they have to resort to fill-in talent especially in prime time during the season when actual weather happens.
