New Bengals PBP Broadcaster Is A Baseball Guy

Wow. The pain of listening to The Bungles just got worse.

I'd rather watch vanilla ice cream melt over listening to Dan Hoard.

Looks like I know what I'll be doing this NFL season.

Dan Hoard, who has been the voice of the Pawtucket Red Sox for six years, is taking the leap to the NFL later this year as the new play-by-play guy on the radio side for the Cincinnati Bengals.

I think he's called a few Reds games here and there. So at least he's familiar with the area.

He should be familiar with the area. He worked at WXIX-TV in Cincinnati and is also the voice of the UC Bearcats!

Dan does a good job of calling football games. It remains to be seen how he will do with the interuptions to the play-by-play that Dave Lapham provides with his on-air cheering and jeering as plays develop.

Will there be a season?

He does a great job on Bearcat football games, so I guess Johannsen or whatever his name was is gone?? I personally like big time homers for local sports broadcasts, open rooting is encouraged!

Cincinnati Kid: I agree. Lapham sounds like those parent pbp folks doing middle school football on public access TV. Listen to Doug Dieken on the Browns. He knows how to do it. Let the pbp guy finish, and come in with your analysis. And he's not a homer.

I agree with those comments. I'm familar with Doug Dieken's broadcasts and know he wants the Browns, but that doesn't cause him to verbally overwhelm his play-by-play man. Hopefully, young people who want to become sports announcers don't think Lapham's way is the right way.

The Bengals announced today that the games will be on WCKY - 1530-AM and WEBN - 102-7-FM. When the Reds' season ends, WLW - 700-AM will also be airing the games.

Just about every sports station in the country ran Johansen's and Lapham's call of the closing seconds of the Bengals' opening day 2009 loss to Denver, when Brandon Stokeley caught a 4th down pass for a TD. Brad made his call while Dave jumped all over him, screaming "OH NO!! OH NO!! OH NO!!" :)

Glad that I missed hearing that (both live and in endless replays). Like I have said, I hope there are no young people working to become sports announcers that think that is the way it is supposed to be done.

Ironically, I saw that play live on CBS. The announcer? The now-former CBS broadcaster Gus Johnson.

One may take the same advice above from Cincinnati Kid for Brad and Dave and dually apply it to Gus.

I saw the CBS replay. Remember, Gus didn't even work for the Bengals! :)

I never really warmed up to Johansen ... he either sounded like he was falling asleep or ready to fly out of the booth. I am OK with the analyst being a homer, which is why I like Lapham (and he knows when not to be a homer). Not at all OK with the PBP guy being that way ... his job is to tell all of us what's going on clearly and accurately, with of course a reasonable slant to the home team.

Some of you are writing in this thread as if you have never even heard of Dan Hoard...

For those that don't know- Dan Hoard worked at Channel 19 for a number of years and did Sports Reporting. While he may have done Play by Play for the Red Sox- it's not as if he doesn't know anything about Cincinnati Sports.

Don't get him confused with Greg Hoard . Both of them have worked in Sports here locally to do Sports Reporting.

Dan Hoard is a top notch play by play pro. He feels very comfortable doing all three sports.
He is really good doing baseball. He will be a step ahead of Brad. Plus, Dan is truly one of the nicest guys you will find in the business.
