New Big Show format

I guess we'll find out Monday, but I'm still not clear on the co-hosts' new role. All week Ordway has been saying goodbye-like, thank yous to people for their roles over the years, but then quickly saying that he'll see them again in the future. I'm confused.

Also, why have they not officially announced that Merloni and Mutnansky are doing the mid day show? That seem a little unusual.

For my two cents worth , I think Dale got the shaft on this one. Why couldn't they just put Merloni on with Dale. I assume that they have to pay him for the remainder of his contract. Dale and Holley is where "EEI consistently won in the ratings. So they replace them with two lightweights.

Not really much info, but looks like the three way is gone.

Steve Buckley
So . . . I'll be the host today of the final three-man-in-a-booth edition of The Big Show. I'll be joined by Rob Bradford and Sean McAdam as we sit at City of Palms Park and talk about the Perk trade. Figure that out.

ESPNr was doing similar stuff years ago... a 45+ purge. They've retreated somewhat from that. But Pete was right when he said they will always be looking to move salary out if it isn't related to m/a drive.
just put Merloni on with Dale
Because they don't want to change again next year when Dale is gone.

Maybe they have finally come to the realization that a loudmouth and two "cohosts" overdriving the mics by constantly shouting over each other and a caller = bad radio? ::)

Somewhere I seem to remember reading that co-hosts made $400 per show. If this is true that would be a savings of $200K per year.

I agree that their biggest problem with the format was too many people talking at once. When Sheppard was an active participant, there were times when, including the caller, five people were talking at once.

I also think that a large part of their problem was that the quality of co-hosts varied wildly. McAdam, Buckley, Merloni, Max, and some others were very good. It was Larry Johnson, Butch Stearns, Fred Smerlas and a few others that had people reaching for the pre-sets. Larry Johnson has been the butt of jokes and criticism on this and many other message boards, but Ordway kept having him back up until a few months ago. It makes me wonder if there was anything to the old "Larry mows his lawn" stuff.

The whiner line is typically about 50% directed at the co-hosts du jour. I wonder how it will be affected. You can only insult Ordway's weight, haircut, and vacation days so much.

Hope Dale gets Pats play by Play and a good contract from CBS next year. In fact I wish Entercomm would let him out of his contract so Gil could retire this year and Dale could be the Pats radio voice in 2011.

Gil is still pretty good, but Gino, God love him, has had it.

Didn't Dale Arnold broadcast Pats games back in the late '80's?

Michel Holley is a borefest. Not sure why he was teamed up with Ordway...maybe to calm the show down, because when I had listened in the past, it was like tuning into a 3 ring circus!

Gino is, ah, uhm, not good.

So far the new version has been decent, but I really don't like the lead-ins when they come back from breaks. They just seem to play for too long. A few seconds would be okay. There is one that features a few electronically altered Cedric Maxwell quotes that seem to last about a minute. There are others which feature some kind of crappy music and Ordway and Holley just talk over it. I also don't like the drumbeats that now play during the whiner line. Does anyone really think that music and sound effects helps the ratings of a sports talk show? There are many stations that play music, if I wanted to hear it I'd listen to them. The music should be like umpire or officals......you shouldn't notice it. If it's annoying, how is it helping?
