New Boston station doing it better- "Legends 700"

Yesterday saw the launch of "Legends 700 WBZ" (who quickly shifted their branding as of today to use their full call letters of WWBZ, likely thanks to a call from CBS Radio a few twists down the dial). A brand new oldies station, 50's and 60's hits, a touch of country & doo wop, with relatively simple imaging and no jocks (as of now).

In a city that had a whole damn faction of the classic soul genre named after it, why aren't any companies taking a shot at this format here? I was mega bummed when CC blew up the latest WDAS-AM in favor of the current waiting-on-hold music format they put there.

Fun fact- I'm under 25 and would happily have this station as a preset

While WWBZ plays an unusual variety of music, it's a stretch to call it a Boston station. It's in little Athol, MA, population 11,000, nearly 70 miles west of Boston. It might be audible during the day in the extreme western part of the Boston SMSA, but in the city proper it's a non-entity. And at night, what Bostonians hear on 700 is WLW. (And wouldn't it be great if some mom-and-pop operation in Ohio got the call WWLW and plopped it on 1030!) It's nice that you like the station, but I'm nearly 60 and I find it too old-sounding. Selling a format like this to advertisers will be a huge challenge.

BTW, one of WWBZ's advertisers is a Maine outfit specializing in "adventure vacations" in northern New England -- whitewater canoeing and the like. Somehow, I don't think that sort of vacation is enticing to -- or even medically advisable for -- a listener whose musical favorites include "The Bristol Stomp" and "Please Help Me I'm Falling."

I've seen 'Graffiti-Gold' formats come and go. I wish them the best. Two suggestions: rely on either donations alone or a hybrid of donations and advertisements to keep the station afloat. would be to include old-school R&B/Soul 'surf rock' and MAYBE some 'Carolina Soul (Beach music).
