New Branding at Global TV

It was announced earlier this week that CanWest will unveil a new branding strategy for the Global network. Beginning Super Bowl Sunday (2/5/2006), the cresent logo that's been in use since 1997 will give way to a new logo (inspired by the "greater than" sign) that is meant to represent a new attitude at Global. It will be an attitude of being "THE Canadian source for news and entertainment..." and an aim toward providing, according to the above release, "greater insight, greater perspective, and greater understanding" to everyday conversations around Canada.

In addition, beginning the next day (2/6/2006), "Global National with Kevin Newman" will move to a unified time slot--5:30PM in each region, before the local newscast. It will be the other way around in the Maritimes--6:30PM, after the local newscast.

Anyone care to comment or provide additional information (such as if this rebranding for Global will drift over to CH or other CanWest networks)?

I wonder what they have in store for local branding. Apparently CHCH is Hamilton is actually displaying the CHCH calls in the copyright part of their newscast closes now. And I know they made a deal about CKRD changing its calls to CHCA when they disaffiliated from the CBC this year.
______________

Thank-you Global. I now have an excuse to leave my TV off until 6, at which time I will watch CityNews.

Global News first at 5:30 WAS doing a good job of distracting my desire to switch to City at 6 at times, and therefore worked in Global's favor,(I thought) plus, what about all those who used to leave it on Global believing that switching stations (to City or CTV) just leads to a repeat of what they already saw on Global, and therefore they stay tuned in.

I never watch the National, therefore, I gather they feel shifting the 6:30 crowd to 5:30 will help...but I say it helps remind everyone to tune into CITY or CTV at 6.
______________

Someone in Toronto really should run news at 5 PM. I'd like to see CTV have a national newscast somewhere in there, with local news starting at 5 at least in Toronto.
______________

With the Maritimes one hour ahead of Eastern time, the only way they could have broadcast "Global National" at 5:30 P.M. local would be for the network to have a feed at 4:30 EST/EDT.

Will this mean that the Eastern and Atlantic time zones will get a live feed and everyone else get "Global National" on tape?? Or might Global do what ABC will do in a couple of weeks and run live multiple feeds of "Global National" (perhaps one for the Eastern and Atlantic time zones; a second for Central time; and the third for the Pacific time zone).

I'd also like to know if the new ">" logo will appear on CH, too.

Do you know what this means?? Every time someone quotes a prior post on the Radio-Info.com boards, they will be promoting Global whether they want to or not. That's because when you quote part of a prior post, each line you quote begins with the ">" symbol!

What a coincidence.

I don't know about 5, but the door is wide open to a 5:30 local newscast. Question is, who would do it?

CUTE!...can't be any worse than holding a pair of Nike shoes upside down though, or even a Nike shirt upside down, for that matter, which is more noticable to the general public with their current symbol.
______________

There was talk at one point about CKVR adding a 5:30 newscast shortly after the flip to A-Channel. Perhaps CHUM found out about Global's plan and decided they might put 5:30 news on CITY.

CTV won't do it because to them, having a uniform schedule across Ontario/Quebec is more important than ratings. Even if running Dr. Phil instead of a local newscast at 5 or 5:30 PM on CFTO costs them significant ratings, they can still take pride in the fact that they can run Dr. Phil at 5 PM on MCTV.
______________

Though Dr. Phil at 5 has actually been ratings winners for stations that previously lost at that time slot -- in the US, WKYC in Cleveland and WTSP in Tampa bay both run Dr. Phil at 5, and won their time slots.

My point was more or less that it would make more sense for CTV to schedule Dr. Phil to take advantage of simsubbing, depending on the location, instead of simply trying to rebroadcast CFTO. For example, WDIV in Detroit runs that program at 3 PM, so the CTV stations in Ottawa (CJOH) and Sarnia (CKCO-TV3), where WDIV is on cable, should be able to run Dr. Phil at 3 and open up the 5-6 PM slot for additional local news.
______________

On ExpressVu the Bell owned Satellite Service, They carry the Boston Network Stations and Dr Phil runs at 5pm on WBZ (the CBS station), so they get a mass simsub at 5pm (until Jan 6th, when Dr Phil moves to 3pm to make room for a 5pm newscast)

That was my thought when this move was announced... personally, I thought their news block was working well, having local news start at 5:30 and national news at 6:30. In fact, I believe the move should have accompanied a new 5pm local newscast on both Global Toronto and Global Quebec.

Speaking of 5pm newscasts, I'm still surprised that to this day no commercial television station in a city the size of Toronto has a 5pm newscast, yet there are several stations in the west (BCTV, CIVT, CICT, CFCN, CITV, CHCA) who have started 5pm newscasts and are winning their timeslots, or at least doing well enough for them to be still around.

I believe CHEK also has 5 PM news. Outside of Western Canada I believe the only English-language news at 5 PM is ATV's Live at Five. Some French stations in Quebec do it though, I think.

Before all the mass-media conglomeration, did anyone east of Alberta other than ATV have 5 PM news?
______________

Though Live At Five's more magazine and talk show than a news program -- the only hard news is the previews for the 6PM newscasts and the weather -- the rest is fluff pieces, interviews, milestones, Maritimer of the Week, etc.
