New call letters for 95.9 WIOP

Found this on some site... The call letters were changed since yesterday! Something is going to happen soon. Maybe it stands for Isle of Palms, thats where the broadcast tower is i think!

WIOP = Isle Of Palms....good thinking!! Probably so. Too bad that it doesn't really hint at what format it will be though.

I'm thinking something along the lines of AC or Classic Hits/Oldies. I wonder how another AC would go against Y102.5.

I think the call sign change was so Miller could keep the WWBD calls. They are now at 94.7/Sumter.

If you check the FCC, in addition to changing the calls, Apex has filed a STA to remain silent for up to 90 days while they work on signing the new station on.

So, we're looking at March-April before a 95.9 sign on, probably.

Radio-X

Smooth Jazz, as much as I like it, isn't exactly an 'in' format right now...I don't know if they would try it or not.

95.9 The Palm, 95.9 The Wave, The Island....something like that would be a nice name, especially for a soft AC. If Apex put enough in to it, I think an AC-type could format on 95.9 could injure WXLY. I doubt it would be hard. Or, as I've said, Classic Hits.

Speaking of WXLY, why don't they carry Delilah? Especially since it's a typical CC AC station? I'm not complaining, but usually they always choose her over Tesh.

95.9 WSPO CHARLESTON

Charleston's 95.9 has changed calls again from WIOP to WSPO.

That would be good, to have another sports station to take on 910 and the Kirkman empire, even though three in a town may be excessive. There would be more local sports talk (compared to boring Bobby Hartin-Ted Byrne and the Sports Express).

I've been a fan of Bobby Hartin for a while and the one main appeal to me is his honesty. He's not trying to be somebody he's not. He's a regular sports fan, but his view of the world can be quite entertaining. If he gets on a rant, it can be comedy gold.

I'd prefer if Bobby did his show alone as I don't think Ted adds anything to the show, if anything it's subtracting from it. There was the great duo of Bobby and Everett. Not to mention the great trio that was Bobby, Everett, and Darren for a short while. I miss those days.

But on the topic of Jonus and The Sports Express. He's a good young talent and I see him growing even more than what he already has. Once again, he's a fan of sports, and his concentrating on MMA I think is a good thing.

But three sports stations in one town... I'm curious how it will go down, if that's the case. There's more than enough fluff music stations, the talk stations here are all drab for the most part, and the sports stations were my last refuge for content I enjoyed. I hope that doesn't get diluted.

You have to remember we have three all sports stations here in the Columbia market and only one of them is doing anything respectable and that is 107.5 The Game. ESPN Radio and 1400 The Team barely crack the ratings, so if it can happen here in Columbia, then I see no reason it cannot survive in Charleston especially when Charleston supports two country stations much better than Columbia does.

Raleigh has three all-sports stations and none of them seem to do much.

Charlotte has just the one, on two frequencies, but it seems to do quite well. They air games on one station and talk on the other, or two separate games.

It would proble do well. They could air games from CSU or Citadel along with some local sports talk around Charleston. Could even air national sports, Atlanta Braves and Carolina Panthers, etc. Sports radio works well in other places in the country. Just take a look at WFAN 660 in New York and in New England WEEI.

107.5 has done well here and it is mostly local sports talk during the day and Fox Sports Radio otherwise and if I recall correctly, its billing is second only to B 106.
