New call letters for 98.9

As of yesterday 98.9 is now WTOH. Time for someone to take the WJKR calls and flip to Jack FM. Also up in Marion, Oh the WDIF call letters return to the city on low power 97.5 FM.

Any idea what the calls actually stand for? In a way WJKR was actually still appropriate, since they sound like jokers.

I play a band once in a while on "Secrets" called Theatre of Hate, which some would say also describes the tenor of the shows on this station. Could that be the TOH?

I just realized that it probably stands for Talk OHio. But I agree "Theatre Of Hate" better captures how they come across. Or, based on what they were saying once when I tuned in for a few minutes to sample the monster that killed Jack, it could also be We Thoroughly Oppose Homosexuality.

Not sure if it means anything, but their Facebook "likes" keep increasing. Up to a shocking 1,603. Must be promoting it heavily on-air.

On-air promo can't BEGIN to explode Likes to that extent, and certainly not when you havea 0.1 share (or even a 1.0, though I doubt they'll ever get that far)!

There is definitely funny business going on here, an effort to get Likes in ways other than organically. For starters, look at their Likes trend page which shows new Likes going from near-zero to a high number, then suddenly falling off a cliff right back to near-zero.

Temporary Spikes like this just don't happen without some substantial funny business, or mobilizing the forces *outside* the market.

That odd graph alone should be enough to show that few of these are actually listeners, but also note that:
--A large portion (maybe 1/3-/12) of the posts are berating the station and what it professes.
--Unlike other stations, this one does not show "people who have Liked us recently," thus allowing you to look
at their profiles. No doubt that is by design because they don't want you to see where, and by whom, this
faux sudden flood of interest came from.
--Where you *can* see their profiles because they posted a comment, you see that:
--A large portion seem to be from people *berating* the station and its stances (but of course you still have to
"Like" to comment. There are even some people who "Liked" just to ask where Jack-FM went.
--A large number of them are from people who aren't even in the Columbus area.

Again, most people who "Like" don't even comment. I can easily see some right-wing organizations saying, "hey, we need your support for a new radio station that spreads the conservative message in Ohio, an important swing state."

Well, propaganda is the name of the game for these guys, so I guess this kind of illusion-creation is what we should expect.

98.9, The Propagandists

The "Answer" is a disaster for Columbus, if only because there is so much we need more -- including the return of Jack, which was just starting to leap up when the sale to Salem killed it.

If Columbus really wanted Jack someone else would step up and do it. While I don't diasgree that WJKR was a success for Radio One (heck with the way WCKX is doing lately they may as well just flip WCKX to Jack FM -- Couldn't hurt to much)...

Regardless of what one wants or thinks.. Salem bought 98.9 and The Answer is a success to them.. I am sure they are making money on it even with the pitiful share it pulls (WMNI A/F beats it)...

I liken 98.9 to some of the programming on 102.1 (namely the syndicated Pacifica stuff) .. Not everyone's cup of tea but some people do actually listen.

I still wish Salem would flip 98.9 to "The Fish" .. but we won't see that happening.

As if Columbus operators always do the obvious, smart thing! With all due respect, I'm ROTFLMAO at that implication! Look how many years CC/Columbus insisted on keeping 93.3 AC. WMNI's stubbornness is shorter-lived, but even a lot dumber. For that matter, the Blitz isn't looking too smart now, the way they keep pushing Active Rock after 21 years when their powerful signal wasn't even able to top 102.5 this time.

Would you rather they go back to "99.7 The Rock" like 2008-2010? With essentially an AOR/classic rock format? I sure don't. It fills a need in Columbus for the harder rock acts 102.5 and 106.7 don't play. They're not down because of the music, but maybe because of the on-air talent that isn't there anymore (Blazor, Mo, Theo, who else am I missing?)

Actually, a lot of the time lately it sounds like they've already moved somewhat back in the direction of "The Rock," but just updated by a few years. Instead of tweaking they should just FINALLY try something outside of the rock realm --be it anything from a Jack to a CHR. Columbus doesn't need an Active Rock. Lots of markets -- including many much larger than Columbus -- don't have one. But don't worry, they won't change as long as "Super-Hal" is there. And apparently WMNI will stay news despite virtually non-existent ratings because Nabco's prez loves it.

To xmusicmatt, if you're reading this: Note that those last two sentences serve as further evidence of how Columbus operators don't always do "what makes sense." There's a lot of personal bias and resultant poor decisions involved as well (which of course happens everywhere, but it's rampant here -- perhaps most of all at a no-debt mom-and-pop operator like Nabco).
