New Call Letters For Power 96-1 Atlanta!

I was listening to Power 96-1 on tuesday morning and noticed that the WKLS-FM calls have been dropped! It now appears that there new call letters are WWPW-FM. It freaked me out when I heard this after all the years that 96.1 in Atlanta had been WKLS-FM!

What an insult to "Officer Don" Kennedy, Lathom, and Swan...besides You Know Who and WABE, WKLS was the oldest callsign on the Atlanta FM dial. Among commercial stations, WZGC is now second oldest, and it's probably a goner, too.

It would have been slightly amusing if they had changed them to WAPW.

96 and Clear Channel...like school on Saturday...no Klass.

I don't see the point. They never use the call letters except at the top of the hour. Most listeners probably don't know what the call letters are. Why give up legendary Atlanta call letters?

Wow....Okay, I heard it too then. Actually heard it early Tuesday afternoon for the first time. But, I'm confused tho, on how new calls are established for a station. Because there is nothing on the internet about it at all. Wouldn't we have been aware of a new application for new call letters? Just surprised that they even changed the calls at all, to tell you the truth. "WKLS" had such a nice ring to it. Those calls sounded great for a CHR as well. So, why change it?

BTW: if google WWPW.......no where does it link up with Power 961. So, I'm def confused.

Any thoughts?

I just did a WKLS search on the FCC site, nothing came up. I do not know how much time they have to "park" the call letters, but maybe they are not going to "park" them. This is a PPM market some except for the FCC and possible branding (like WSB) call letters are not that big of a deal. Of course if Mr Dickey wants to follow up on his saving of rock statement, here is a chance to rub a little salt in the wound.

Cumulus should change WNNX to WKLS and WWWQ (back) to WAPW (but keep the Q100 moniker), and park WNNX on 106.7. They could even make up something for WNNX like "We're Now News Xperts" or something like that.

Wild still has Viva and Lengend's call letters. For us younger folks, call letters aren't important.
I wonder what the most "obsolete" "meaningful" call letters on the FM dial are. WYAY? WNNX? WZGC? In the latter case, 92.9 hasn't been Z93 for almost a decade and hasn't been owned by General Cinema longer than that.

Side note: I remember when Z-93 was the sponsor of General Cinema's midnight movies. Then, suddenly one week, the sponsor became 94Q. Must have been around the time they sold off WZGC.

I like how they use the old Speak & Spell educational toy for the top of the hour W-W-P-W.

I wonder why they didn't choose WPWR? There's no AM or FM call letters in use. Only WPWR-TV (My50) in Chicago.
