New Call Letters For Power 96-1 Atlanta!

Also, already mentioned on here. But, I don't think WAPW is currently in use either, which would be perfect! But personally, they should've just kept the WKLS calls.

WKLS could almost pass for Clear Channel's KISS brand anyway!  ::)

Just another proof how effing stupid they are. Especially this market........

Is it just me or is the trend recently to have calls that are W-throwaway letter-significant letter-another significant letter? Examples:

WUBL
WWLG
WWVA (-FM, that is)
WWPW
WSRV

I wonder if the Z in WZGC was that way back in the day and they just made the best of it with Z-93?

I think there's 104.1 reasons why they couldn't name the station 'Kiss', Brent.

No. WZGC was owned by the same company that owned General Cinemas. The "GC" stood for "General Cinema."

Yes, I know about the GC part, but how did they come up with the "Z"? Was it a random/throwaway letter or were they deliberately looking for something cool and hip that would rhyme with Ninety-Three? Not that that is that hard, since you could have B, C, D, E, G, P, T, or V as well as Z.

Funny was when Z93 was giving away a trip to England to see Queen and they were running the promo with an English accent VO and they kept referring to the station as "Zed-93".

I just realized that four of the five above are all CC stations.

Some call letters are just completely random too, quite a few heritage calls here in Albany, NY are like that... WROW, WQBK and WYJB

Maybe the extra letter was decided randomly? Like "W?RV" for WSRV or similar? ;)

WSB, WSRV, WSBB and WSB FM are all Cox Atlanta non urban properties. I do not think the "S" is a throwaway. IIRC Welcome South Brother was a 750 nickname. I can only guess the W & S (first two letters) are intentional to tie the stations to WSB 750 AM the mother-ship. Craig Ashwood works for Cox maybe he can fill us in.

Good point on WSRV possibly being done to provide affinity with WSB.

A lot of heritage calls were randomly assigned, including WSB. "Welcome South Brother" was a back-formation. WSB used to use it in back-to-school safety PSAs in the 1970s to mean "Watch School Buses".

When did the FCC start allowing stations to pick their own calls? WGST, Atlanta's second radio station and the first with "vanity" calls, took those calls in 1925.

Why is it even nicknamed "Power" in the first place? Doesn't really belong on a top 40 pop station IMO; couldn't they just call it "Channel 961" like they do their CC stations in San Diego and Detroit.

You know I don't even get Power 96.1 anymore. Back when they first launched they were new and fresh and seemed looser in general and they played 10,000 songs in a row! Now I dunno man, I don't get Power anymore, I'm nostalgic for the old days of Power 96.1 when they first launched. Maybe it's time for a format change, maybe flip it to an active rocker and take on Cumulus directly, I think 98.9 The Bone is vulnerable.
