New Call letters for WXRP

Merlin allegedly applied for the calls WYNY, which is currently licensed to a CP. These calls have been typically associated with Country.

Re: New Call letters for WRXP

Well, there is a void in the marketplace for country (along with a significant population that are fans of the music here). It certainly would bring in somewhat bigger numbers than 'RXP ever could.

I hope the country fans get their station, they've been suffering longer than dance fans.

Whether it be on a team bus, a traffic helicopter or a horse, does anyone have an idea of *when* Randy Michaels arrives?

Whatever the change(s), this story certainly blows away Harold Camping as the radio executive of the year.

Merlin Media LLC registered the domain "1019wyny.com" on June 20 ...

It's not going country...All signs that 101.9 becomes a news or talk station because the people they are hiring at the moment.

Touche, Nate...

Back to the subject... the fact that few think 101.9 is going to flip to country by virtue of getting the WYNY call letters reminds me of when a phantom domain "country1027.com" registered by a "Vaicom" - note the typo - was registered, and gave the local rednecks a tingle up their wife-beater-T-shirt-exposed arm.

I'd still bank on news, talk, or some combination thereof as the main format for this station. But maybe country will be the music that "comes out to play" on weekends.

From today's AllAccess.com comes the news that the owner of the construction permit for WYNY AM in Middletown NY is selling it to his dad for $1.
However the call letters are not included in the sale. According to the F.C.C. filing, he "Reserves the right to use to transfer to another facility either before or after consummation."
Perhaps this guy was shrewd enough to realize the WYNY callsign was up for grabs, and took out the construction permit primarily to obtain the rights to them. Perhaps he figured that eventually a station in New York would be interested in purchasing this venerable call.

Wonder if Merlin will use their legal magic and take 'em to court for the callsign?

Take them to court on what basis?

More likely than not they'll just throw a boatload of cash at him, which they've probably already done.

I think the WYNY Call letters in Middletown is for WYNY-AM so the WYNY-FM call letters could be available for 101.9 FM.

Or at the very least, they could "unretire" the WNEW call letters from Florida for that purpose...

If call letters mattered so much, 92.3's call letters would be WNOW-FM

Call letters matter to some, and not to others. They don't matter like they used to when you needed to reinforce recall for the diary, but for people who love broadcasting, call letters still have importance, sentimental value, etc.

If call letters didn't matter so much, why are the WNEW calls parked in Jupiter, FL? Why are the WBCN calls parked in Charlotte, NC?

Incidentally, Charlotte is exactly where the WNOW calls are right now.

Call it a wild hunch, but I don't think CBS Radio is going to be too excited to assign the WNEW calls to Merlin Media for a station that may be aimed at their three talk juggernauts. The WNEW calls may be in Jupiter, but they're still on a CBS Radio-owned property.
