New Calls for HI-99??

Emmis is selling off WTHI-TV. What does this mean for WTHI-FM?? Who will change their call letters ( FM ot TV)? Who will move out of 918 Ohio St??

Thoughts.

My guess is that neither will change their calls.

I doubt they will, either. There are several markets where radio and TV stations share call letters without being part of the same company.

Some nearby examples... in Louisville, the WHAS calls are shared by two different companies. WHAS-TV 11 is owned by Belo whereas WHAS(AM) 840 is owned by Clear Channel. There's a similiar situation in Grand Rapids where WOOD-TV 8 is owned by LIN Television and WOOD-FM and AM are owned by Clear Channel.

So unless there's a major issue between LIN and Emmis , the WTHI calls will probably remain in place on both channel 10 and 99.9 FM.

There are several other examples of stations making slight changes to the calls when the radio and TV stations separate. WAVE-TV and WAVG radio at one time in Louisville, WNDU becoming WNDV in South bend while TV remained WNDU-TV. WLW radio and WLWT-TV are now separate and WLW is co-owned with WKRC-TV (CC also owns WKRC radio).<P ID="signature">______________

Speaking of WLW & WLWT, remember when they were a part of Avco, who also had channel 13 in Indy, 2 in Dayton, and 10(?)in Columbus and they all shared the WLW call letters? 13 was WLWI, 2 was WLWD, and 10 was WLWC.

It was actually channel 4 in Columbus. They always hyphenated the calls on screen (WLW-D, etc.).

I didn't know Wikipedia had articles about individual stations, but I found this about WTHR's history as WLW-I).

I remember, too, either Bob Braun or Paul Dixon or maybe both, sometime during their daily shows would put on the screen all 4 of the call letters.

I am really dating myself here, but I remember as a kid watching the Ruth Lyons 50-50 club show on channel 13 that during the show each day, they would take a little "station break" where the band on the show would sing the channel number and location of each of the stations that the show was aired on. I also barely remember a show called Midwestern Hayride that aired Saturday nights that also originated in Cincinnati.

Paul Dixon would give the call letters as WLW-D in Dayton, WLW-C in Columbus, WLW-I in Indianapolis and WLW-T in "Tincinnati". When I was in junior high we got up at 4:30AM to make the drive to WLWT to be in the stutio audience for "that dumb show" as Paul called it. And he asked on the broadcast" what time did we get up just to come and see this dumb show?".

Of course, most of those (WNDU-->WNDV being an exception) were made when calls had to change when any kind of a combination was split up. Now that a call letter change is no longer required, I suspect there won't be any real changes call-letter wise at WTHI-TV or Hi 99. The people who probably have the most to worry about are those in master control at WTHI-TV. As I understand, LIN controls WLFI and WANE from WISH's master control.

Not to mention WIIH, WDTN Dayton, WIVB Buffalo, NY (not sure about their other Buffalo station), and their digital counterparts.

WNDY was also slated to be added to WISH's master control after LIN took over if I remember correctly. I'm not sure if that has already occurred or will very soon.

Isn't WAND's master control housed at the WISH facility, too?
