New calls for X103.9

I ran into someone recently who's son is a weekender there and she mentioned that they were all told that if the ratings didn't improve with the change, it's going spanish. Not trying to start rumors, it's just what I heard. New owners are spanish broadcasters so it would seem to make sense.

So did Sun City Communications, owner of KVIB, purchased KKFR & KEXX?? Or are they interested in purchasing the stations or is this a LMA with Sun City??

well in the last book, 103.9 went from a 1.3 to a 1.1. so they are pretty much tied with KNRJ! they can be picked up much easier then power. I'm surprised they don't swap dial positions

It's an LMA with Sun City.

As for the rumors that 103.9 will go Spanish if they can't improve their ratings, it's possible. With the calls, they can easily become "Radio Doble Equis." However, if I recall correctly, the people who own Sun City also run an English-language station - WRMF in West Palm Beach, FL.

Sounds like the beginning of the end hope i am wrong and this can all be blamed on the people that took over the edge after riviera bought them no ifs ands or buts very sad news!!!They gt better numbers when kzon was alternative but the damage they inflicted is irreverseable:(

It's amazing that this entire thread has nothing but rumor and innuendo and no basis in fact - with the exception of the call letter change.

Riviera operates two English language stations in Las Vegas and the ownership does own a station in West Palm that is Hot AC. They are broadcasters and do what's best for the marketplace.

I don't care if they give away $10,000 an hour, that station has absolutely no chance of success when they 1) have no stable identity or market presence and 2) have a poor stick.

Obviously the musical direction might be okay if they would stick to an identity for more than one or two books, but they can't or won't. Radio has become increasingly knee-jerk and allows for no opportunities for personalities to develop or stations to grow the way they once did. Obviously, the competition is intense with people favoring iPod's, internet and satellite radio along with their own music collections to that of terrestrial radio, but nevertheless, the Edge/Edge Radio/FM 103.9/X103.9 would do itself a great service by actually putting on some compelling personalities, good music and LEAVE IT THERE for awhile and see what happens. For the love of God--this station was once in the top 10 (sure it was in the 90s and of course it had to do with Howard Stern) it is still a tragic tale of what bad management can do.

As for the speculation, the station has some value on the open market, but truthfully, it's hard to sell a house right now--nevermind a radio station in a large market. It's in Riveria's best interest to actually try and make it work.

Come on Eric let the cat out the bag already. I hear you are VERY CLOSE to the Sun City people ;) so if anyone knows what's about to happen, it's you

i keep reading this, but have no trouble picking them up. I Have always been able to pick up 103.9 for the last 10 years. What areas is it shady?

I've never had a problem picking up their signal, Mega's signal, or KCDX's signal, for that matter! That's a problem that there's such a disparity in the Valley for these stations. :-\ It's a shame...I will really miss 103.9's music if it goes away!!!

Thanks, but I'm nowhere near to the Scottsdale Galleria studios of KVIB or any stations at 4745 N. 7th St! The closest I get to any Sun City people would be if I'm near on the northwest side! ;D

You should ask KOOL Listener Lauren about that! The NW side is hit-or-miss for 103.9, and KCDX is nonexistent unless you stream online, just like Old Town Scottsdale and Tempe are bad places to pick up 98.3.

As for the 104.3 signal, it's surprisingly robust for any Crown King rimshot. Less static and interference than 95.1, 97.5, or 98.3 in the EV.

Those rimshots you mention continue to perform pretty well. KKFR has more daily cume than KTAR-FM, KLNZ, KNIX, KDKB, KMLE, and KYOT.

I can always get 103.9 in my car and the only time I get static is on the 51 curve near camelback. When I drive to Tucson, I can almost listen the whoel way there. But I am an East Sider, not sure how the signal is on the westside

You must work in KKFR sales.

I recently received a year-end review memo showing the ratings of a three station group in the Midwest.

First station:
(lists share rankings over 12 months for station #1 and its direct competitor. Station #1 beat the pants out of its competition most of the year)

GM's commentary about the numbers:
"Over the 12 month period, (station #1) beat (its competition) in 18-34 in 9 out of 12 monthly books and 25-54 in 10 out of 12 monthly books."

Second station:
(lists share rankings over 6 months for station #2 and its direct competitor, from the date that station #2 signed on. Station #2 beat its competition 4 out of 6 months.)

GM's commentary about the numbers:
"Since it launched on June 1st, (station #2) led by (its morning show) beat (competitor) in persons 25-54, men 25-54, and especially in its target of men 35-54 4 out of 6 months. Although the station doesn't target women, we're strong here as well."

Third station:
(Lists share rankings over 12 months for station #3 and its competitor. Station #3 is getting killed; its competition started the year in the mid 4's and ended in the 5's while station #3 started the year at 1.8 and ended around 1.2.)

GM's commentary about the numbers:
"(Station #3) continues to be one of the highest cuming stations in the market."

If you need to put lipstick on a pig of a station, you can always talk about cume.

The discussion was specifically about a signal challenge. My point is, their cume (the best barometer to measure that with) shows large cume.
