New Car radio has up to 8 HD channels

My new car radio from Hyundai has HD radio. It says it can receive up to 8 subchaanels from each station. Does this mean the radio may be compatible with all digital HD signal in the future?

I think you can add all digital to your list of things that will never happen. The installed base of a billion analog radios cannot be obsoleted in favor of all digital HD.

To answer your question - yes - it will be compatible. I reverse engineered the firmware in an HD radio, the decode algorithm doesn't care where the digital signal comes from - AM, FM, all digital, etc. It doesn't care, it detects digital, it decodes it. That is all.

Are you kidding me? EIGHT HD channels per channel? I would love to hear that. An average of 12 kbps per channel. That would sound GREAT..... ::) :p

We have two local TV stations here doing five subs. They are both full or partial godcasters.

In the example of 8 HD channels, there would be no analog carrier which would open up a ton of bandwidth.
