New catches today - 660 and 750

This morning between 6 am and about 7:15 am local time: Classic Country on 660; possibly KEYZ or KAPS (unid). I suspect KEYZ.

On 750, classic hits of the 60's and 70's positively ID'd as "CK750" Saskatoon/Melfort, SK. Checking the FCC database there appear to be stations on 750 in both cities; neither of course has CK750 as their callsign and I don't understand how they could have two stations on the same frequency that close, especially considering the patterns on the FCC site. Maybe someone on here knows whether CK750 is actually CJWW or CJVR. On the station's web site, CJVR appears to be an FM but you know how that goes...

Both were received in the northern suburbs of Chicago for an extended period of time, in the clear; just long, slow fading typical of the lower end of the band.

Audio,

Your CK750 is definitely Melfort, SK. I get them, as well as CKDM 730 Dauphin, MB very often during sunrise skip. The FCC is awful about updating Canadian records, so it's very possible that the Saskatoon allocation was from years ago and may no longer exist.

I suspect KEYZ as well for your 660, although KAPS would be a pretty awesome catch! It also may have been WMIC from Sandusky, MI or KTNN from Window Rock. They tend to play lots of 90's country on that station.

I would think KEYZ or KTNN. KAPS does the "Best Country Around" network from Citadel/Cumulus. Means lots of today's country...

Actually, US stations may be required to protect both records. Sometimes, the consulting engineer looks into the situation further, but if it doesn't make any difference, they'll show protection of both records. Many are just allotments, and these are often moved around or substituted.

At one time, WMIC 660 Sandusky, MI did have a 500 watt PSA, and they are Country. I don't think they would be on before 7:00 AM CST, and I don't think they call it Classic Country. WFAN sunrise would be about a half hour before, and I'm not sure if the PSA is still in effect.

750 was once the home of CJWW a country station that had flipped to FM. The station currently there (that id's as CK 750 was previously at another frequency that wasn't as go0d. Afterh CJWW flipped, the station in Melfort applied to move to 750. It does cover Saskato0n as a local and most of Saskatchewan as well. Since the cities are close together they can id as Melfort/Saskato0n.

FWIW, CJWW is also on 600 khz., sometimes they come in here in the PNW with strong signals from the NE.

I also recently logged CKJH 750 with a mix of oldies and classic hits, coming in fairly strong from the NE.

Here are a couple of handy sites that may aid in ID'ing Canadian stations, first the Canada and US station search page: http://topazdesigns.com/ambc/

This is a link to a search feature within the Canadian Communications Foundation site, providing a timeline and other interesting things about stations: www.broadcasting-history.ca/index3.html (Select "Station Listings and History.")

You're right. I forgot that it was the former CFQC that flipped to FM and made space for CJWW to move to 600 from 750. CJWW is not an FM station.
