New CBS Layoffs?

Well wouldn't that officially be the entire JACK staff? As far as I know they don't have a promo director or any board-ops. Take away the PD and a good chunk of the sales team and who do you have left?

Why would a Jack station need a PD? Couldn't someone else there program those songs? CC stations have guys programming many more stations. That should be the quickest hour a day for any PD.

Understand some management down-sizing at CBS again ... this time hitting JACK sales & PD? Can anyone confirm?

Sounds about right to me for CBS lately. In the Rose City last week Lisa Adams (ex-KQMV PD) was shown the door at KXJM along with the cluster Director of Engineering. Those stations are on the block, so many believed it was just cost-cutting before the sale.

Lay-offs at JACK Seattle? Now just how much farther 96.5 cut back?

I wonder.....:

(DREAM SEQUENCE BEGINS)

A JACK Seattle listener is lying in bed when his clock radio goes off at 6:00 AM, in the middle of JACK's unannounced last song; "Enjoy The Silence" Depeche Mode:

(A FEW SECONDS OF DEAD AIR)

"Good Morning. Welcome to Seattle's Newest Radio Station. 96-5 Quiet FM, KQUF Seattle. No talk, no music, no news, no commercials, no sports, no weather, no traffic, no PSAs, no jingles, no sweepers, no voice-overs, no time checks, no contests, no infomercials. There's no request line. No studio line and no suggestion line. At home, in the car. Or at the library. We are Seattle's Quiet Station. The All New 96-5 Quiet FM"

(SILENCE....DEAD AIR....NOTHING)

A few months later, KQUF rockets straight to #1 on the PPM survey

(DREAM SEQUENCE ENDS)

The station has always been a joke and it will only get worse as they try to run it with a reduced crew.

Radio has gotten so bad lately with all the lay offs and automation was it any wonder how the Jack format was created. Since everybody is laughing at your cheap contests, cheap talent, cheap production why not ligtimize a format that sucks bu having one moron play what he wants. Isn't that what bad pd's/consultants do anyway play what they want :D

Hope everyone layed off yesterday can find a new gig soon. Happened to me in March, had to decide whether to stay in, or get out. Chose to stay in,

Best wishes to you guys-

:( Sorry to see Tall Paul let go. I guess the bean counters don't realize the value in true utility players. He was always a class act. You lose the guys with institutional knowledge of stations that don't have much staff to begin with, AM1090, Jack FM, KJR FM and then things happen like audio at wrong speed, automation drop offs, sloppy joins and outdated liners and suddenly spots are missed, listeners grow weary of a bad experience and audience declines and then the losses become bigger than the short term savings that were realized from the cuts. As a sales guy I think Nils will land on his feet but the guys who are out on the programming, production, operation sides may have a much tougher time landing in this economy.

Tell me about it. I got laid off from JACK in February and I'm still looking! =)

These recent layoffs are very sad to see, especially in this economy. Nils is a class act and won't be on the beach for long. I knew Tall Paul during my years at JACK and prior to that at K-Rock and he is one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. Another guy canned from the programming side at JACK was Jared Stanger. I worked with him for years at JACK and K-Rock and prior to that at the End. Another down to earth guy who busted his tail just trying to succeed and he's suddenly shown the door. Unfortunately this is part of any business, but I really hope all of these guys land back on their feet really soon.

Tall Paul's out? That's awful.
How many people were let go?

I second everything Ron said...

Ron good to hear from yah, hope things are well in your world. I ended up down the hill from 1000 dexter, doing much of the same.

Does anyone have a list of who was cut? Tall Paul is a WONDERFUL guy...he doesn't deserve that. He worked his can off for the benefit of that operation....

They just cut 20 in LA today too.

I really think that while CBS has some awesome stations in their portfolio, that their New York operation clearly has its head mounted in their $$$. They are going to trash all those awesome stations just to kiss Sumner Redstone's $$$.

Just the beginnin of layoffs I'm afraid and not just CBS :'(
Time for radio folk to stick together. Heard mamma got the boot in Portland too as CBS cut :-\

"Time for radio folk to stick together."

Agree, radio is a medium. But, time for EVERYONE to stick together.

we love it, otherwise we wouldn't be here writing about it.

CBS has made cuts across the country. Here in LA the cuts were significant. Portland, Seattle and SF also saw cuts. It is in response to the complete collapse of CBS stock and poor revenue and rating performance across the board in the West. KMPS is about to be beaten by THE WOLF due to an overload of commercials not because of anything the WOLF has done. JACK and KPTK have been gutted. KBKS has been rudderless since their PD left. I note in key demos the station has been in free fall since May. The last few trends rank the station 7th in their 18-34 demo and 27th in prime demos. A complete revamp of the station is needed but CBS is unlikely to spend the dollars so they will let it whither. KZOK is the notable exception and continues to perform well. A great company is but a shadow of itself, in my humble opinion.

Pardon me for the slightly off-topic post, but I just find it very amusing to see people declare who they think mammaknowsbest really is.
